does a pigeon,s tail length factor in to your decision to stock a bird ?

A very succesful breeder and Competetion Flyer once told me a pigeons tail should never extend more then a inch from the end of the wing feathers.

What do you guys think ?

What a bird looks or feels like physically has absolutely no bearing on my decisions when it comes to potentially breeding from it. All I care about is the performance and the character. So no, I don't care about the tail length.

George , I think that the length of tail does matter, I think that it needs to be in proportion with the wing for balance , just speculation though as even my castier birds wings seem to be half inch or so under the tail length.
Personaly I like birds with more cast than whats popular as the roll is more balanced which means smoother.
I had to learn how to like them though as my mind told me that short and coby had to be better , and I think that many are stuck on this, I had to change that belief and mind set.

Guys,
I am of the opinion that proper proportioning is essential to the peformance. The roller was developed in this manner. When we get away from the essentials of the type(s)that do roll well we are not doing the breed any favors.

Look at NASCAR. The cars are aerodynanically sound to provide the proper type to both comply with the rules(standard) set by the governing body and to be as fast as possible. Any deviation from the original aerodynamic setups(wreck, bumps, improper postioning of aero package) usually result in a slower and therefore losing effort by the team.
Second is just first loser.

I don't believe any particular physical trait has a whole lot to do with performance; but I do know what I like. What I like is the tail just being an inch longer than the wings. That usually occurrs when the bird has that Jonathan Red Delicious apple shaped body. That is where all the good things start.

All my birds’ wings are half inch shorter. Some are long cast body and some cubby like an apple shape. The performances are similar but the cubby birds look more compact to me. The white rollers line I have are long casted with good performance while all others are cubby shaped and don’t see any difference in performance. You always get culls but I am talking about the keepers.
