I like to let them set in the new loft for a few days, getting use to the new surrounding's and birds. Also make sure it knows how to trap into the box before letting it go.

i would either tape the wings or pluck or even cut the main flight feathers and when they grow back they will usually be homed and i even let the bird out when i let the other kit birds out but you do have to keep an eye on that bird stay near it at all times or you can put it in a little carrier that he can see threw all sides and place him where he can see the kit flying and do that for a month or until you feel comfortable letting the bird go fly with your kit ---------- The man in black city-side-lofts.piczo.com Ben the bird man of Idaho

There is no 100% way. For young birds, I wait at least 30 days and let them spend a couple of those weeks on the roof in a cage to look around and get familiar with its new surroundings! Some even tape their first 4 flights the first few days of releasing them, so they can't get up and go far! I let other birds out first and wait for them to come down and then let my new birds go one at a time! I also make sure their hungry when I let them out!Their mind is on the food bowl instead of freedom!
I don't release older birds, I usually don't get them unless I'm gonna use them for the breed pen! If I did, I would probably double the time and steps from the top paragraph. Everybody is different, but these are some of my "rituals"! Good luck!
