Hey Guys, how important is added ventilation in the summer months like now? I see a lot of pictures of kit boxes with solid doors and wire bottoms with vents at the top. Is that enough ventilation or would wire doors be better??

Robby, I use wire over the bobs that doubles as the landing board.

Robby, as you can see in the pics of my kitbox I posted, I have wire doors on for the summer..When winter rolls around I will take them off and put the solid doors on....Even with the solid doors, my birds get plenty of fresh air from the wire floor, hole for the drop trap, as well as the top 4" across the entire top of the front and back is wire as well, so to me, having that much ventilation wouldnt make a difference with or without wire doors...Personal preference.

The best ventilation is about air flow; the movement of air. Hot air rises. If you have an open bottom you ventilate near the top. In a 4X4X4 box I have approximately 20 square inches of ventalation near the top of the box. The box seems to be cooler than the outside on the hotest of days and warmer than outside on the coldest of days. I am satisfied that my birds are in a healthy environment. There has never been panting on the inside. It also should be noted that the roof has the normal insulation of singles and a under layer of an insulating material.
My breeder loft is also ventalated and has a fan; a large fan. ---------- Nick
