Good luck with your mating with the rollers you described.Nrhoua. I have a stud of red recessive and red mottle that go back directly to William Pensoms crystal palace champion. Let us know how the youngsters perform for you. Yous in the sport, Ray Sanchez

Nice looking bird Doua, but 10-footers don't cut it for me, personally. I never quite know what to do with them. I tend to raise quite a few of them...judges seem to miss them a lot in scoring....they just occupy a sort of "no-man's land" in the sport for me, personally.
Ray, Good to see you posting on the site. I haven't heard from you since our phone chat last year. I hope things are going better in your region, now. How do those Crystal Palace line of birds perform for you? YITS, Cliff

Guys, I bred alot of those 10 footers in my Henderson line.It was good to see tight kitting and big breaks 10+,but I was looking for some deeper birds.Working with Dave,he sent me some breeding stock to improve the depth.I couldn't tell you if he sent me birds that were faster, better style or both.I can say I'm getting more 15 footers and some occasional 25 footers.Still in the process of flying these birds and I'm hopefull that as they fill out and mature, there depth will increase.I'm not opposed to a fast 10 footer with style,it's alot better than a dishrag or stiff...Aloha,Todd
ps... Curious what Ray Sanchez has to say.

I'd also like to add, this is usually the point were guys start crossing with other familys, instead of staying within the family looking for better breeding stock....Aloha,Todd

Hi Todd,
The first thing I should ask is how old are the birds that are rolling 10 feet, are they young birds or holdover birds? I attended the Northern California Roller Club, NBRC and World Cup flys when Dave Henderson competed. What my friends and I saw were turns of about 10 to 20 feet with good velocity and clean breaks from his kit. The biggest mijority of the turns were quarter turns and sometimes a half turn would be seen. Kevin Naylor purchased some stock birds from me around 10 years ago when I lived in California, he flew in the Northern California Roller Club. Joe Urban competed in the same district as Kevin Naylor and I judged that area atleast twice. Dave and Joe basicly have the same family of birds. Dave Henderson judged that district when I was present and Kevin Naylor competed with my stock. Kevin won consistently with one family of mine that were deeper and had high velocity spins. Kevin told me that both Dave and Joe purchased birds from him, so it's possible that you own some bird that are related to my stock. Could you please post some pictures of your birds from Dave on RPDC so that I can look at them.

this red mottle cock was put on a tortise shell hen I aqcuired from a guy named Norman of Modesto California, this pair has produced the fastest and deepest spinner in my 1st Kit. I decided to put the cock onto the emberton hen to see what they can throw out. I've seen the Emberton hen fly and she spins really fast but only a good 5 feet because eversince I got her she just went into the breeding pens and she was maybe 3 or 4 months old when I got her. As for the Red mottle cock he was once the fastest rolling cock in the loft, I'm gonna try this pair out, breed for speed if you know what I mean.. ---------- Nrhoua (Doua) Xiong 4581 25th ave. sacramento C.A. 95820 http://freewebs.com/parlorrollers

Cliff, I'm not a big fan of short rollers too, who is? Having said that, I have recently stocked a 10-15 footer. Aren't rollermen just full of it? Saying one thing and doing another. At this time, I need that short roller for it's other attributes than it's depth. I truly believe every roller in the breeding pen has it's place. I may cull him later in my program who knows.... at this time in my breeding program short ins't so bad just as long as it will give me the results I'm looking for in another department. Thor

Tapp, Yeah, that's what "they" say, but if you breed nothing but 10-footers, in my experience, you'll always have 10-footers! I suppose if you want to wait 10 years you might eventually increase your depth a little. Who's got that kind of time? LOL!
Thor, Hehehehe. Come to think of it, I have a bird or two that was given to me by Joe Bob and Clay that are 15 footers, but very fast, excellent kitters, great type, and great work rates! YITS, Cliff

Having birds that spin only 10 ft is like drinking half a glass of beer. I guess some folks like them to spin short and snappy, to each his own. Birds have got to roll at least 20 feet and have good style and velocity or I get bored.

Gregg, Yes...in a few cases, the 15 footers are mated because of type, style, frequency or work rate. In others, they are mated to deeper birds.
Ken, Dark Roll said it pretty well. And besides that, the problem is that if you have deeper birds in a kit, the attention of many judges is drawn to the deeper birds that get scored, and the 10-footers get passed over in scoring. The higher your birds fly, 10 foot looks like merely an inch or so and the perspective makes it easy to miss that depth in scoring. 20 feet is harder to miss in scoring, and more fun to watch. YITS, Cliff

I would never stock anything under 25ft. It would have to be a striaght blur, and with great frequency in my opinion. As a personal practice, 25 feet is the bare minimum. No exceptions. Depth is one of the things that is hardest to reclaim, once it is lost. JMO. Nice looking bird though.
