Here is my problem, after afew weeks lockdown due to frequent storms and just plain terrible weather. I let my birds out and they won't get any height, maybe tree top (100 ft)at most. Causing rolldowns, which I never had before. During thier lockdown I put them on a pellet that is 20% protien and low in sodium. Could that be the PROBLEM? And what is a safe % of protien to feed? Before the lockdown and feed change they were up 200 to 400 ft. I'd say. They are all within 6 mo. of age. Whats my cure??

Take them off those pellets. You carbed them up okay! Hah1 Hah1 Put them on grain again sir. Milo, wheat.and austrian peas should help them fly right again. Give them more wheat than milo and about half the amount of peas. Then you might like to feed them only wheat and some milo. Are you going to fly them everyother day? Let us know more about your manegement. Good luck1 Ray

Hey Paul, how is it going.I had the same problem between the weather and the molt.Ray hit the nail on the head, they are just plain fat.I gave mine 50/50 mix and wheat and they straightened right out in about three or four days.

Pellets get digested quicker than grain. What was OK for the time duration (24 hours) when you fed them gain is no longer valid. Your birds are extremely hungry when you fly them. It is best to incorporate the pellets with their normal grain feed for added protein.

First of all a BIG THANKS to all of you for your advise. I guess I tried to find a QUICK fix and it back fired. All for that idea. LOL I guess its true that what works for one, doen't always work for someone else. When I put them back on milo and wheat, is that the only feed they get at all.I mean do I keep them on the wheat and milo forever. I was feeding a good pigeon mix before I started them on the pellets.Should I go back to that mix or just keep them, on the wheat and milo. As far as their management. I was flying them 2 days in a row and resting the 3rd day. And on the 3rd day I was giving them an extra cup of feed. Was that a mistake, giving the extra feed?

BlueJay, I had my birds on the pellets for about 2 weeks of nothing but pellets and all they could eat. Was that not long enough for them to get use to them? Afew times of flying they were good with their height, but all of a sudden they had NO height. Only tree top height and they stayed at that height for about a week before I grounded them and asked for HELP.

I did the same thing, switched to straight pellets and didn't like it. My birds acted like they were starving to death. After getting a few comments on the subject, it was obviuos that the pellet breaks down a lot faster and the bird digest it faster. Therefore they are hungry sooner! It really goofed up my birds.

Fhtfire (another Paul) uses about 1/5 pellets mix to his feed and so I tried this ratio. It seems to be better for me. I will keeep playing with it and see what happens! I am going to try to keep at least some pellets in their diet till they are mature! The extra nutrition is important for heath reasons while their growing!

My birds are just starting to lift again now that the weather is cooling a bit! They will learn that the trees aren't a good place to hover around as the sharks come back in!

There is some good articles in the archives about the pellet feeding! Some like it and some don't!

Val....your right about the birds look like they were starving. I fed them all they could eat too. I thought that would do the trick. I talk to rollerpigeon and got the ideas from him. He said this method worked great for him and got plenty of air time from his birds at least 1 hr, if not more. I figured with the pellets they would all get the same nutricional (
