The California Birmingham Roller Club was the first club to judge turns, style, velosity, kitting, depths and freqency per turn. Every turn was given quality points and depth points and added up after the fly. There was no guessing what the judge had to figure out after the fly. It was the most scientific judging system of all times. We held judging school everyyear in Modesto,California. Also in other areas in California. The Califnia Competion Roller Club located in Modesto held judging seminars to and the judging system was good. The Modesto-Tracy =1 District Club Champion in 1982 was Eay Sanchez. ken Billings was Club Champion in 1983. From 1984 tp 2000 Ray Sanchez was Club Champion. The CBRC District =1 Champion Young Bird Flyer for 1987 was Rich Marshall and in 1988 Champion Young Bird Flyer was Chris Saybe. The CBRC district=1 Champion ten bird flyer was Billy Mattews. The PRA Sectioal Fly Champion in 1987 was Ray Sanchez. This fly was held in Modesto,Fresno, Santa Cruz, and SanJose. Don Quellete and Richy Nafsgar were the judges. The PRA Sectioal Fly in 1988 was held in Modesto,San Jose, and Santa Cruz.Dan Quellete was the judge and Kenny Billings was the recorder. In 1989 the CBRC and CCRC held a Internatioal Show. The judge for this event was George Mason from England and the recorder was Graham Dexter from England also. Champion Roller was a red grizzle owned by Ray Sanchez.

In regard to those stock birds you got from Kevin Naylor.Did you get them in California after i moved to Missouri? Tell me the colors you purchased from him. I remember most of the birds he got from me, He told me he was selling lot of the rollers from my stock and i saw all the kit birds he bred. Kevin was winning flys right off the bat with my stock and instructions. How many do you have and are you flying in competion. Kevin said he sold stock to Hi Five roller club members and it helped them breed and fly better rollers. Keep in touch! Roller Fancier,Ray

Hi Ken i heard my friend Jack Meyers spoke to you about rollers and other interesting stories. Jack moved to Modesto in the late seventees from Los Angeles therefor he doesnt know about the history from 1941 to the time he moved into the Stanislaus District. Kenny Billings was born in Modesto in 1962 so he has more infomation what was going on in the Stanislaus area. I will be posting more history about the Modesto roller activities and members soon as possible. I was promoting the pigeon fancy at a very youg age in all facets of the hobby. Then my idea to travel all over the state of California promoting the fancy began in my early twentees.I helped start many all-breed clubs and specialty clubs in California. The California Competion Roller Club was formerly called the Modesto Roller Association and before that the Modesto Roller Club. I have a good idea what families you are breeding from and they are related to my stock in many ways Good luck with your stock and select the best birds and you will succeed in what your goals are in the roller breed. Best Regards,Ray

The infomation you gave me about one of my families of rollers is acrute. Kevin did purchase one tortishell hen and one grizzle cock from me. But he said they were sold to another roller person. If you dont have those colors in the stock you have that means they are not polluted. This is great because you dont have to worry about those colors being bred. When your ready to introduce another color mate one of your best pair to them and fly out the young. Stock the best of the new color and mate those youngsters together and see what the results are. If you want to keep your main family pure for the colors you described dont polute them with other colors. You have my mealy bar, blue check, and black check family behind that family. The blue bars and red checks come from the mealy bar and checks including the white feathers from the mealy bars. Are you raising any feathers on there legs or feet? A lavender would go nicely with that family. How are the young coming along? Do you know how to feed competion rollers for competion purposes? Keep in touch okay. In the sport,Ray

Ray, (Crystal Palace) do you remember getting a phone call one night back in the early 90's from a guy in Whittier that was getting back into rollers? We chatted about your birds in general and I thought you mentioned that you also sang and were a body builder. Anyway, you were going to be attending the Pensom Memorial at the Orange Show Fair Grounds in San Bernardino and were bringing me a pair of birds to get me started. One was a blue check cock and I can't rememberwhat the hen was. To make a long story short, we never found each other that day. Too bad for me, as you mentioned how you thought the birds would produce the goods. I've often wondered about what I could have done with those birds but As it turned out another good guy named Jim Lippincott set me up with some good birds at that time and it worked out OK but I sure would have liked to have met you and chatted in person. I'm glad to see you're still around and doing well. Keep the knowledge flowing.

Take care,
Russ

Hi Russ sometimes i wonder what has happened to people i spoke to years ago. It was realy swell hearing from you again. Im glad to hear you purchased stock from Jim Lippincott. He bought the 26 family from Frank Lavin when he first started to raise rollers. I still have a small family of them pure. They were crossed to my inbred family of mealy bar and dark check that Pensom said were his champion families. Acually the 26 family were bred from the same family but more red selfs and red mottles were bred into them. I have all the pedigrees in my big black box. When the molt is over there pictures will be revield so the entire world can see them. Do you have any inclination or pedigree on your stock. Perhapss you have some Plona stock. Let us know what you have because Jim always possesed good breeding stock. Keep in touch,Russ. Yours in the fancy,Ray

I was reading the W.H. Pensom thread by Rudy Zupppp and found the excerpt below posted by Crystalpalace -- Ray

>>>> I moved to L.A. in 1964 and met with Bill Pensom and Ralph Hilton every month at the L.A.P.C. table show and meeting. They had me handle their rollers and taught me the finner points about picking out breeders and fliers. Then on weekends i would visit them and judge the birds in the air.<<<<<

....and this too

>>>>>In otherwords the original crystal palice family that Bill Pensom won champion in New Yotk. The 514 are related to them too. In the sport,Ray<<<<<

QUESTION: Didn't Ralph Hilton have 514 Blood in his birds?

I have a book published in November 1958 in Los Angeles, Calif and signed by William Pensom to a guy named Randy. Picked it up from an older Indian fella near a reservation in Northern, Calif. It's a Yellow and White Book with a Red Spangle/Mottle Roller Pigeon on the front page (soft-cover).

QUESTION #2: Being how Pensom personally signed the book, how much do you think it would be worth to a collector? Just wondering that's all.

Why sure Ralph had the=514 stock in his brssding pen. I have this infomation in my pedigree papers. My crystal palace red mottels and spangles go back direcly to Ralph Hilton and Bill Pensom. I have the shinny blacks too and other colors in the Hilton family. You will see them later in the year after the molt. Id contact a book colector to see what he says the book is worth. Good LUCK1 Ray

KGB did you get any black rollers from my stock? A friend of Kevin Naylor got some and he flew in the club. Did you purhase the old red bar cock and dark blue bar hen? How about a blue check cock! Those were some of the breeders that bred lot of the young birds. You have to know when to carb up and carb down when your feeding for competion. Then they can be wormed before competion and given several different kind of vitamins. Your the manager of you birds therefore its your responsibility to ge them ready for a fly. When you start scoring twenty turns consistantly with good depth you know your on the right track. Then more turns should be accomplihed expecially those big breaks that rack up the score. Once you figure out a real good program for your team of rollers try and stick with it. let us know what is happening out your way. Keep your eye in the sky. Ray
