One of my kit birds today refused to fly with the kit,so I picked him up and he seemed to be light and listless, also very messy around the poop shoot, do you think he has a chance if medicated with 4 and 1, I did remove him from the kit box but do you think I should medicate the kit also? Pat

I just got done with the same thing. I used 4 in 1 on all birds in the kit. I also got the sick out with the green shits away from the other birds.

By treating them all you could save any from getting it, or just got it. If it is light and showing the green around the back end, it will probably die from it.

Tony is real good with stuff like this. I get his advice first.

This time of year with the birds being in moult is a good time to give them that preventitive medication. Before putting the breeders together next winter is a good time to med them too.The whole flock.Always give a probiotic or yogurt afterwards if it's not already in the All-in-one to get that gut bacteria working again.----------

You have rodents in your loft. Look for their droppings and eradicate your loft from rodents. This sick bird is giving you a warning of things to come. You can medicate all you want, but the problem is still there and sooner or latter they will become immune to all this medication and they will fall apart on you all at once. Then you will have crises.

No rodents in my breeder loft or kit boxs, I have been raising rollers for 3 years and I take pride in clean and ventilated boxs and lofts ,glue traps and poison feed for rodents, out of reach of the birds of course! Moth balls under loft and cider vinegar and vitamins every week! First time ever having a sick bird,it is one of my hendersons about 6 months old, Thanks for any help guys, also clean waterers with CLOROX once a week, Pat

Pat,
I have used a more agressive method in the past when just one bird is ill and I don`t want to treat the entire kit.
I mix 1/8 tsp of 4n1 into about 2 cc`s of distilled water and shoot it down into the crop of the affected bird. Usually 4-5 days, once a day,and it gets a lot better. I don`t have to worry about the bird not getting the medication because he isn`t drinking. Usually leaves a nasty taste in the mouth and they`ll get a drink anyway. You can also do this with plain water if dehydration is an issue.
Good Luck

Pat,
If I could suggest something, back off on the clorox bleach. Its good for keeping waterers clean this time of year, especially. Its basically formulated to keep the railroad tracks off the skivvy's on wash day.Instead use a nolvasan solution for disinfecting waterers.A brewers yeast sprinkled on the feed best simulates what is given to youngsters from their parent. This is especially important at weaning time and the next 2 months following. The Hendersons are small hearty pigeons,I have found myself better results with training, when their nutrient level is at an optimun. One or two feedings missed can send them the other way on you, keep them fed and fed well till they get through this stressful time....Aloha,Todd

I agree, Todd. Putting Chlorox in the water defeats the purpose of probiotics and destroys the good bacteria in the pigeon's gut that we are trying to keep high in numbers in order to prevent the pathogenic bacteria from becoming established. The only valid place for disinfectants like chlorox and novolsan (my personal favorite, as well), in my opinon, is in disinfecting the water containers during water changes.
YITS,
Cliff
