This eye cold or whatever it is has been kicking my butt!It only affects one eye usually!Untreated, they get worse and die. Had several birds get it but cure most with baytril, some respond to teramycin! But other ones keep coming down with it. Constant battle for a couple of months now! 99% of it just affects YBs, seldom breeders!4 n 1 doesn't seem to help, nor does sulmet!

Any suggestions!

This is not a good picture but this is an example!
The other eye will look perfectly clear!

have you tried divet. it comes in a tablet. i use it for one eye colds and it works great. its also good for other things as well. for a roller you would give 1/4 to 1/2 tablet for 3 to 5 days. its 20.00 per 100 tablets. im not sure but i dont think tony has it. it works well if tony does not have it i will send you some just let me know. jammer1225@aol.com best of luck val

My birds get wormed and a 4n1 twice a year-once just before breeding season and another before fall.If any get sick for any reason between these times, they go into the old parrot cage(believe me if your one of my rollers you dont want to go into the parrot cage)-They have two days to get better (with meds),and a week after that to stay better. only one has ever made it out of the parrot cage!Last year I had two birds that went in but did not come out. They were humanly dispatched. This year I only had the one bird appear sick and he was better the next day.He made it for another week.I am certianly no expert breeder--but this is how I handled it years ago with raceing birds.I have a friend that doesn't even give them the parrot cage -If they look sick at all-'your out of there! over several years he has very few sick birds, and as far as I know he has nevr given his birds any type of meds.I would say this goes with clean water, good air cir, clean lofts etc.I am not saying you dont just adding that for some of the new guys.We all can quickly get lax about feed spills(mice)damp conditions etc.I am sure others have just as good if not better Ideas--just saying what I do.

Its pretty much just seems to be in my two youngest kitboxes. My boxes are small compared to the recent pictures of kitboxes! I always felt this helps my birds to kit tighter, which they stay pretty tight! I usually spray them with a pressure sprayer once a month and get them very clean! Guess I will try every 2 weeks and see if this helps! I do quarantine them imediatly and I spot it by going out at night and using a flashlight!I have seen something , I think it is called oxine or something that you spray the lofts with and the birds and it is a disinfectant! Sure I could use clorox and water, but not sure what strength!

I will try these new ideas and see what happens. I was culling them, but then I got the baytril to work and once I get them completly over it, they seem to be immune then!Just a pain in the a--!

Hay Val--Just a thought,
I have another friend that sprays out his kit boxes with water. He had a huge die off last year.I am not saying that might be your problem ,but I think when you ad water to all that bacteria you might be creating a breeding ground for other things besides birds. My kitboxs are lined with white shower board and the perchs are plastic.there is no wood exposed anywhere. Not even where the poop drops threw. I never use water of anytype in the breeding loft(except drinking water which is set up on its own board and the board is changed reg. for a dry one) or the kit boxes. Bath water is put on the wire directly and removed in about 10 min. I use cheap kitty litter(unsented-walmart) in the breeding loft(also have used wood pellets-but they are expensive)-not so much to cut down on scraping, but to keep everything as dry as poss. my area is very humid .I am know poopologist but I know that extra moisture can give you real problems!Just like when your birds have some slimy crap and things get wet(Mine seem to get this when they gorge themselves on a new batch of grit). When this happens I throw something down to absorb it then I scrape it up.What say the rest of you Guys.High and dry allways is my motto. Hope this helps-as I said before I am no expert.I just know the hose or powerwasher is off limits in my lofts.BTW-If you have wood,a powerwasher might be driveing the bac.into the wood and a dienfectant sprayed on might not be killing your problem.
Hope you get it solved-and kill whatever those little buggers that are getting some of your birds!

Thanks Mike, I've only used the pressure sprayer in the kit boxes, but your right, lots of cracks and crevises! Guess that i will go back to scraping! Thanks for your advice, it is always appreciated!

Most of my birds are very healthy looking and doing well. Seems to be mostly in the youngest birds and happens the first couple of weeks that I put them in the kit boxes. Stress time! This is my first year with these new families! I bred way to many, filled a triple kit box! To many youngsters too fast! I'll never go through this again! Just learning things the hard way! LOL

On the brighter side, just this week, my oldest kit is really turning it on and my second kit is gonna even be better I think. Their already breaking together and getting some short rolls! Some of these comp guys would probably chuckle if they say what I'm getting excited over, but they look like different birds suddenly! It's about time! Hopefully the sharks will give a liitle time to enjoy and let them improve!

Hey Val,

I ran into the same problem of having a cold in one eye and the other eye being clear. I think my problem was brought on by having to many young in to small an area. I've been giving my young birds (respitory and more antibiotics),combining the antibiotics with more room and they seem to be better. I finished my double kit box and they're not overcrowded anymore. Hopefuly that solved my problem...

Val,

Get some NFZ puffer, made by Loveland Industries in Greeley, Co. I've used it for years, will dry up the eye and kill the infection. Use with caution as it is Nitrofurazone a carcinogen. I just make sure I use rubber gloves. It WILL knock out the one eye cold problems. Get it at any farm supply store. It is labelled for dogs and cats.
