I finally did it. After all these years of having rollers I had my first fall fly on 9-2-07. Now I'm hooked. I flew an 11 bird kit that I have been working real hard with, maybe too hard. I have tried tweaking their feed too often trying to find just the right mix to keep them low enough to judge but active enough to score some points.
Eldon Cheney was the judge for our region. A perfect judge for a new competitor. He was so positive about my birds and he handled some of my birds, and offered some good advice on what was needed and how to go about getting what I needed.
My birds scored 61 points and I know that doesn't sound like much but I didn't DQ and that leaves me a lot of room for improvement. I was the 7th person to fly and at that point I was in 1st position. Then we went to Owensboro Ky. and I very quickly lost that position.
I was able to see some good kits fly and would have loved to follow the judge and RD through Illinois to watch those boys fly. I may schedule some time off next year during our regional fly and follow the judge to all these places.
Hopefully with some hard work and persistance, and some good stock bird selection I will double my score next year. If not next year then the one after that. Like I said, I am hooked and I am in it for the long haul.

Good job, Big Bob! Sounds like MY first fly. There is nothing like seeing the birds of other men to raise the bar for your own breeding and training program and to overcome loft-blindness. You're on your way, now, my friend.

Bob,

Outstanding! National and international competition is not that old. This was my first year to compete on those levels as well. I competed in the World Cup in June and now the Fall Fly in October. It is a fun time. I got exited and I am 64 years old; couldn't even sleep the night before.

You did good, my friend.

Nick
