I am know just getting back into Rollers and from what I can tell one thing that I have picked up on is that folks are having more & more problems with birds of prey. When I stopped keeping rollers the last time I would have an occasional problem with them maybe 1-5 times in a year, seems like it has really become more of a problem. Guess I am not looking forward to that.

What I am leading up to is I also hear that so & so is not flying in the competition as the problem is real bad during the time that the fly is taking place.

Keep in mind I have been away from the sport for a while...

Why don't they schedule the World Cup or other major flys earlier in the year when most folks are not bothered as much by birds of prey?

Don't most folks fly their hold over/old bird kits for this competition?

Richard,

The World Cup is an International Fly. It occurs in the Spring. Each Region has a fly off with a Regional judge. The winners of the Regions are then judged by a single finals judge that flies around the world. It takes a couple of Months for the finals judge to make the rounds.
There is a lot of negotiating from each Region trying to get the best final fly slot. Too early and the Regional is during the hawk migration, too late and it is too hot.

The Fall Fly is only a US fly. Again the regions have there fly offs. Then one judge does all of the finalists. The trick again is to get the Regional fly late enough in the hot regions for them to be able to fly, get the birds through the molt, but before the hawks.

In "theory" everyone in a region should be flying in similar conditions (heat, molt, BOP)

As you can see there is no way to please all of the people all of the time.

Keith,

Thank you for the info, guess you can tell I have been away a while.

I used to see hawks in my neighborhood when I had birds before, I have not seen any here in several years. Hopefully they will give me a break. I did not have a lot of problems with them like I am reading here since getting back into rollers. Their #s must be up, I am sure I will have my challenges.

Richard,
Well, there is a better way....read my blog under this sites blog section from the main page. We could handle this much more effectively, but for some reason, there are enough men who do not want to change the way things are being done....Heck, we were not even successful at trying to change the name of the fly from the "Fall Fly" to the "NBRC National Championship Fly"! Go figure....
YITS,
Cliff
