Hey, From another thread on this board, I am drawn to ask why?? Why, do you keep and raise your birds? Why, when the expense eats into mosts budgets. Why, when you lose birds to the Sky Sharks do you yet again open the door and loose them into the sky? Why scrape, day after day, why muck out, why when friends look at you as if you are slightly deranged? Why, agonize over your breeding plans? WHY ROLLERS? You tell me, then I'll tell you, why I raise rollers.

Sometimes I ask myself that very question. usually when I had an over fly or lost birds to a predator. All I know is when they aren't here I feel like I am missing a part of my life. I had a rough family life as a kid growing up and my loft is the only place I could sit for hours and hide while watching my birds. Funny noone ever found me there. I still go to the loft or sit outside and watch them fly it gives me a real sense of peace. C.J.

Thom, for me it is like a whole other world. In my line of work i put in 12 hours a day on average. Im a manager in a very high stress manufacturing facility. 250 plus employees. Some days I`m a manager, other days I get to play baby sitter-mariage counciler- psychologist- referee-engineer- etc... you get the picture.
When I get in my truck to go home, it is all gone. I`m thinking about which kit to fly. how to feed,Etc... My birds are my six pack. My peace of mind and my sanity on most days. When that doesnt work, well.. there is always that bottle of J.D. downstairs. LOL ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

It is a passion. I like how I feel about myself when I am around them. I like the way they look; I like the way they feel; I like the way they smell. I am a different person when I am listening to good blues music or when involved with my birds. I like being around other breeders; even when we do not agree socially or politically we have that common ground that brings us together in harmony and good will. I am going to drive for 10 1/2 hours in the next day or two just to be around other breeders who share the same passion. All of this totally outweighs any negetive aspects of the hobby.

I have a horrible marriage! Been miserable for years! But with kids involved, I stay committed! I never want to try to explain why my happiness means more to me than theirs! Deep down inside though, the depression was taking a toll! One night I prayed for something to focus on, to get me through! The next day I opened the newspaper and "bam" the first thing I saw was an add for rollers for sale! As a child, the happiest times I remember was when I raised rollers! I started on a loft that very next day! Within two weeks, I had rollers!
Long story short, I am happier than I've been in years! Look forward to getting home every day! Being happy inside reflects in every part of my life!I don't think about how my life could be,should be, just how good my rollers can be! Their usally my last thought before I go to sleep and my first thought when I awake!
What else is there to explain?

Its the only place I get to play GOD. I decide who lives, who dies, who breeds, who flys. Who gets all the feed they can eat or who get just a spoonful per day, who gets all the grit anytime or just grit once per week. All birds get water. It's fun, watching your work, and decisions make a better fly team. Yes there are sky sharks, coons, disease's, the things trying to derail us but we keep going on. Diehards trying to make better birds then the ones that came before us and tried.

Just like Mike Tyson, even if I'm is a millionaire i'll be still raising rollers until the day I die. It's a part of life. Many people don't understand it and say "Joe and his pigeons" but it doesnt matter to me. It's a part of me and what i do. And when you do find people with the same passion like you do it's a relief like they understand you and what you've been through and they acknowledge you for who you really are.-joe

Why? The first pigeon I ever had was a common the fell out of an old Oak in front of my house. After much, much begging my mother allowed me to keep it. At first in a box then in an old kitchen cabinet covered with chicken wire and stuck between the forks of a small tree. The first rollers were free hand-me-downs from a local breeder. Culls probably, but to me!!! Homemade pen from scrounged wood, much like some the youngsters build now. A cat killed all my young.
Years later that old hankering came back, I was young and just married, fresh meat in the local fire department, and that required working sometimes as much as 72 hours without any choice. Work or leave, it was all political in those days, no Union, no protection! Yes, I'm one of those!
After a nasty devorce and the loss of my home and loft I forgot about rollers for a long time. Now, I'm an oldfart, with the sweetest wife, and with children you get grandchildren, the only thing I needed was a kitbox filing up with young birds. Thanks to Tony's hardwork I now have every thing I need. Could it get any better? (Well the sky-sharks could go away!)
Hidden in the responces to my question, were sacrifice from the young ones, by placing themselves after the welfare of their birds, and joy just from being able to hold, charish.and love them little balls of feathers. Hell, thats what I got from the old-farts as well. Along with a sense of belonging, and peace, with a dusting of pride.
Why, do I like rollers, In the imortal words of Bill Cosby, (I dont know!)

Thom, Age old question, age old answer, it's a love affair, largely one sided where the work is considered. Like yourself, I got a squeak out of the barn when I was seven. At ten we moved back onto the farm and I started renovating an old pig shed and the rafters just looked to inviting to resist. My hampshire sows would eat any youngster that fell to the floor and couldn't get up and moving in a hurry. By the time I went into the service I had taken over the barn and had three hundred and fifty pigeons to dispose of. When I got out I found BR's and it has been a love affair ever since. I just had to import a Wisconsin farm girl and my life became complete(I had to throw a few back too!). Thirty Eight plus years later and I still am fascinated with every facet of my hobby. Gregg.
