Hello friends. My name is Will and I am new to the site. I have a question. What do you think about feeding your flyers just winter wheat? Let me know

Hey Will, Welcome to the site, I don't think there is enough nutrition in wheat alone.

I do it in the summer, but watch out, if they have any roll it tends to bring it all out!!!but do not feed wheat only for any extended period of time. Pat from Pa.

I prefer the red winter wheat. Has a higher protien level and it is prefered by my birds because it offers craw comfort(it is less pointed and edgy)

My opinion

Nick

Bigwilly,

I don't do it consistantly. The reason being I can only get it from my sourse certian times of the year. I cannot safely store enough to last me the whole year, but when I do get it I feed it. I do my own mixing for my breeders and youngsters; I feed straight wheat and a wheat/milo mixture to my kit birds on a schedule. I use red winter wheat in all of it when I have it. I am thinking about increasing my storage capacity and when I do I will feed winter wheat all of the time.

Nick

Red wheat is my base feed.Youngbirds get 4 parts wheat,1 milo,1 safflower,1 peas.Kitbirds once they are around 6 months old get 50/50 wheat milo.During the moult period I'm giving them some safflower and peas to get them through the moult.Breeders I feed cafeteria style all they want. That includes large corn and pigeon pellets.Welcome to RPDC.----------

I feed my birds mix and nothing else but mix until they start to come into the roll...what I mean when they come into the roll is at least 10' rolls. Then they get an extra day of rest and on the rest day they get a wheat milo mix..but on the fly day they get mix....I am talking about birds that have found the roll....As for young birds just doing flips..they get mix and all they can get...as long as they still trap fast. You have to remember that young birds are babies and are still growing and developing...wheat does not have enough for young birds. Most of my young birds get wheat or wheat and milo until they are at least 7 or 8 months old or so....anyway...young birds should get mix and as much as they can eat as long as they still trap fast.....the birds will still develop the roll on mix......you adjust and play with the feed when they start actually rolling and rolling consistantley....Even my old birds get mix....unless I am preparing for a comp....or it is the last day of there rest...then I add the wheat and milo.....if they are getting a little bit two happy...they will get mix and then wheat and milo for a couple days....anyway...YOUNG BIRDS GET MIX>>>>>TEENAGERS GET MIX AND WHEAT MILO EVERY NOW AND THEN>>>>>>OLD BIRDS GET THE REST AND FOOD PLAYED WITH.

I'm with Paul,
My birds old or young get a commercial mixed feed. I have experimented with wheat, wheat/milo, and milo only and found that in my family, that i get a better performance factor when they get a controlled amount of a mix. Again, this is just my observation in the birds I fly and raise.
