No self-respecting roller breeder would put culls up for auction. They are there to help others in the hobby.

Exactly as Milo decribed. Those that auction birds to the NBRC are doing it more so out of a need to support the hobby versus needing the money, therefore they are providing birds that they themselves would fly.

I got a pair last year from there last year and i am fliying six young out of that pair and they are really smoking birds.I would suggest if you are new to the hobby that would probably the way to start you off in the right way.

For the most part, you are getting top quality stock. On the other hand,I did pay a small fortune for a proven pair of birds that went barren after their first round. No fault to the breeder or myself,it was a bummer....Aloha,Todd

Some of the famialy on the auction. The only way you'll ever get your hands on them is to get them there.unless you happen to be friends with the seller. I got a pair Scott campbell put on the auction. and he sent me 8 birds. I have the first one I raised in my A team. And quaified for the region. I have seven more flying that are way to young to tell yet. He said this year if I need more hens he would send them! One heck of a guy! I would say if you want a quailty bird and can't go see them in the air. It's a place to get good one's. Theses guys ain't going to sell crap on there. Theses are big name flyers!! . PS. Tonys Ruby rollers are Quality, and depth. check out his depth and quality on his W/C score sheet. It don't get much better than that!!!!! Kim Tappenden ---------- Tapp

The auction birds usually go for top dollar because all the revenue goes to help what ever event they are promoting. There were birds on the convention auction that you could never purchase at any price. Some of these breeders never sell birds but they do donate them to help raise money for the conventions. I just got back from the convention and the North Carolina breeders flew their kits for us and then they let us pick two birds out of their A kits that they then put in the auction on Saturday. And believe me they were picking the best out of the air. At one point the breeder was bidding on his own bird because he hated to lose it from his kit. One of the guys bidding against him finally beat him out in the bidding. I don't remember the final bid but it was well over $200. The man went up, paid his money, got his bird, and then walked over and gave it back to the breeder. Now that is class. I also know of one guy that won 10 young birds on the online auction. He won them from one of the hall of fame members and a man that is well respected in the NBRC and known for his judgeing and quality of rollers. We decided to go pick up the birds instead of having them shipped. The man said when we come to get them he will pick out 20 birds because of the price paid for them and that he wanted this guy to get a good start on this family of birds. The birds that I fly were won at the convention in Illinois in 2004. I won them on a $5.00 raffle ticket. It was supposed to be 10 young birds but when I went to pick them up the breeder found out that I was just getting started back in rollers and he started pulling breeders right out of his breeding pens. These $5.00 birds three years later placed me 8th in my first regional fall fly. So the answere to your question is no, they are not culls or junk birds. They are donated birds that the breeders donating them are proud of and are usually coming from years of dedicated breeding and training. Their name and reputation is stamped on the wings of every bird they donate. ---------- Big Bob Fire Tower Roller Lofts

Last years auction I won the birds from Paul Fullerton and I tell you what they were some freaking awesome birds and after flying some out I put alot to use in the stock loft and they were producing better than what the parents were in the air.

Even if they are not on the auction the majority of breeders will NOT give out junk. I let go of a kit I was going to fly in the FF to get a fellow flyer a leg up. I also threw in two of my A teamers. Just felt like it was the thing to do. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!
