I too made it to the convention this year. This is about my 6th convention and I agree it was the best one I have been to. It was probably the biggest turn out for a convention to date. My nephew was able to go with me. He has been into rollers for about a year now. We both had a great time. He was able to meet a lot of people he has read about and I have talked about. Everyone treated him great and wanted him to keep them informed on how he is progressing in the hobby.
We watched a lot of really good rollers perform which is the main reason I wanted him to go. We don't get to go visit lofts very often and I wanted him to see how some of the more experienced guys did it. Needless to say he is really fired up. We were able to get him some rollers at the auction and he is anxious to get them in the air and see what he has got. I think he is hooked. The difference between the two of us is I had rollers for years and never wanted to compete and that is all he wants to do. I have always been proud of him but I believe he will give me one more reason to be proud.
For any of you that were at the convention I was the big fat guy with the big mustache that everyone was calling lucky. They called me that because I won the 50/50 drawing on Friday night and won a lot of other raffle drawings.
I am going to try my best to go to the convention next year and many more after that. If you like rollers and the people that share in your hobby then I think you would enjoy it as much as everyone else that was there.

I have some pictures I took during this year's NBRC Convention. I will post them in small groups so you don't become overwhelmed and bored.

The first picture is of Rosie Iverson. The reason why I got interested in her and her dad is that they were there; and they loved sharing thier time with each other. She loves and trust her dad and it obvious that her dad (Andrew Iverson from Rockville, VA)loves his daughter. She used his feet as a chair bottom and his legs as a chair back and it was OK with him. It is obvious this is something they do regularly.

Below is Joe Bob Stuka. It is funny we never just call him Joe or Joe Stuka. His name tag just had "Joe Bob" on it.

The following is Frank Lavin. He may be the bloodline producer of "Super Chicken". He is a superb rollerman and great guy.

yeah I got pics. 168 of them, but I still haven't spent the time to figure out how to post them. I got photo bucket but just haven't really tried to figure it out yet. Also I am still on the antiquated dial up so everything takes forever. Hopefully I will have fast access by the middle of October.

Nick,
The little red head in your pic was a sweetie. Someone had given her a chair to sit in at Danny Horners. Joe Marlett's wife was worn out and trying to stand in the shade and didn't have a chair. I offered the little girl $1.00 for her chair for Maritta and she said just take it she didn't want the dollar. I talked her into taking the dollar anyway.
I think she was the one drawing the raffle tickets at the banquet also.

Thanks, Jay!
I really enjoyed the down time we had on together on Wednesday evening, (your wife, Lorraine, is a real peach!) and at the hospitality suite. (You missed out on a great opportunity to score big by hosting the suite, Tony!) I wish the temperatures would have been a little cooler so the rest of the convention could have seen my kit and the Futurity Kit at its peak. But they still showed what they are made of to show that kind of speed, quality and depth from only a couple hundred feet.

Things got pretty hectic for the guys hosting during the day. It was fun to see it all come together and all the attention to detail pay off. The birds did their job, and the guys all had them prepped and ready for you. Each of our competitions in the Fall and Spring are a smaller version of the same thing......good rollers...good men....good food...now you see why I am so high on our region! And now you see why it's a tough region to compete in!

Sorry we didn't get to spend a little more time together Nick. I hope the trip dispelled the myths about color breeding in the Carolinas for you. It's about performance, here. You don't breed birds like you saw if you are a color-breeder, even though our family has color genes scattered here and there. A lot of guys said..."Your birds look just lke mine (color-wise). I was expecting some weird colors!" I liked Truesdale's kit, too. What consisitancy in speed, depth and quality performance for 45 minutes or so!

Thanks for identifying yourself Bob! Man you are the luckiest guy alive. (He won all the raffles, $, and drawings guys!) It makes me feel good to have played a small part in motivating your nephew! He is lucky to have an uncle like you getting him quality birds like you did! I enjoyed spending time with you, Bob, and look forward to next year!

Cliff

Hey Cliff, sounds like I did miss out. Just couldn't put things together this year. I hear you and some others did a great job on the convention. I bet you could do the same for the club as NBRC President?

I would like to see that happen but am open to hearing what everyone proposes for the clubs future.

Well, I am enjoying reading all these posts describing the convention and looking at these pictures you guys are sharing.

Thanks for working so hard for the rest of us Cliff, et al...

Nick,

I agree with you that Greg Truesdale flew the best kit. I don’t know if the rest did not intentionally. I know for a fact that Cliff’s A team were plucked and parked for the upcoming FF. I don’t know if the others are following the same strategy or simply don’t want to show their A teams to other competitors from other regions. Please don’t see my comments as a down grade to any of those fine flyers but the way I am thinking is when I have so many people in my back yard from around the country, I would like to show off with my best birds. Most of the flyers flew 07 birds with some mixed of 06. That is only my take and please correct it me if you see it differently.

Charlie Stack has awesome kits to watch but he was going to fly on Sunday for whoever is going to his house. But his house was 2 hours drive in the opposite direction from my route which would have made my trip back home lengthened tremendously and would have delayed me from picking up my dog from my friend house who was expecting me around a certain time due to other commitments he had. Otherwise, I would have gone to watch some excellent rollers.

Cliff,
I think I shook all of you guys hands and thanked you for a great convention. If I missed anyone I'm sorry because you guys did an outstanding job. I still can't believe how well everything came off like clockwork. You boys not only know rollers you know organization. I know you all had to work very hard at it and I am sure there were times that you wondered if it was worth it. I hope after it was all over you all agreed it was totaly worth it. It was plain to see by your rollers that when you guys decide to do something you put all you have into it. I would have loved to watch your birds fly when it wasn't so hot and they had a few more feathers on their necks. And not only did I want to thank you all but all of your families and friends that were in the background serving food and working their tails off for a bunch of roller people that they will probably never see again. They were great.
Tell Jay he needs to do some kind of article letting people know what kind of platform he is running on. Everyone needs to get to know him and know what he stands for. I didn't get to know him well but from what I saw he seems OK to me.
And the tour of the racing team facilities was awesome. I'm not even a big fan but enjoyed it a lot.
My nickname should be lucky, not because of all I won but because I was lucky enough to be able to attend the best convention ever. Thanks again.

Everyone had hawks show up except one (hmmmm). I did see some white bar crap and some other off-the-wall colors, but not anymore than you could find in other places in the country. There were color breeders at the Convention and I even talked to some(LOL). I just don't understand the desire to make something out of a performance breed that wasn't already there and the next time I hear that paying the feed bill gives a person license to do as they please with Rollers Im gonna............well, I have approval to dispose of them from the powers that be(LOL). The quickest birds and the best kitting birds I saw was Greg Truesdale's. I did not get around to asking him what his family was based on, but I am going to send him an email and ask him. I do not critisize anyones birds except to my closest friends, but Truesdale's birds went up together; where exceptionally quick in the roll; came down together; and did this through a couple of hawk attacks. The kit was so tight.

I had a good time. Cliff Ball was organized like a professional and was a very good host. His place is beautiful and comfortable. Reminds me of my uncle's place in LaJolla, CA with the horses; the pond; and the layout. You should be proud of it, Cliff as I am sure you are.

I am picking out some more pictures that I think will have some interest from and of the Convention.

Jay,

Here are some simple instruction that Stan Arnold posted:

Most of the people use photobucket to dispaly pictures. The following is from a Stan Arnold post.

You should download Photobucket if you haven't got it .Its free.I don't know how to use another picturs gallery.I copied what I wrote last time.Hope it helps.
Hey Guys:
You dont have to type any codes at all. What you do is if you have the pictures uploaded on photobucket you just click on the The url(Thats the one in the middle of the three boxes under the picture).click the picture,go to EDIT, click COPY and then come to this site.Bring up (new post)or reply and write what you want about the picture.Move the blinking line down a bit and click EDIT again then click PASTE.The code will show on the box you are writing in.When you click the reply the picture will show up.

Jerry,
We considered having USFWS representatives as part of a panel discussion to examine the issues more closely. The idea was put to rest as members expressed their sincere desire to enjoy themselves freely, and not be forced to endure the potential negativity associated with re-hashing this issue. I can't say that I blame them. The ground-swell of goodwill, comraderie, and all 'round positive energy will, hopefully, have a ripple effect throughout the hobby.

Jay,
Does the black roller that you bought have boots? If so, he is not the black that I put in the kit. That one was donated by Marty Belk, who breeds rollers he got from Joe Bob. Both of the blacks were good, but the one with boots bumped a time or two, but not lately (in the past several weeks). I just wanted you to be aware.
