Hi gentlemen, my question is what are advantages and disadvantages in given our rollers city tap water to drink. I have heard that the chlorine levels can cause problems in our rollers digestive track by killing good bacteria that they need. How true is this. Thank's in advance. R.Fuentes.

Raul,

How you doing?

One thing I started doing was not filling up my drinking containers with the garden hose. I clean them off with it, then I fill them up in the house. Reason is that I heard that the garden hoses are made with lead and people should not drink out of them. I hate to think how many times I drank out of them.

As far as the clorine in the water is concerned, I have not worried about it, maybe someone will chime in here and help us out.

The birds are all doing fine...

Chlorine disapates pretty fast. Leave it in an open top bucket for 24 hrs and it should be ok! I was told this by a fish guy! Been doing it myself and seems to be ok!

When I fly young birds for the first time, some refuse to trap and stay out all night and sometimes for couple of days until they decide they had enough with their “first day out” crap. I watched them drink water out of the neighbor’s swimming pool, which is heavy chlorinated. Those birds are hardy and their intestates were designed for this environment just like cats and dogs. Why the worry and we ourselves drink the tap water!! Lets not make it a complicated science. Simplicity does it…

The only reason that I let my water set out over night is because I put pro- biotics in the water and I was told that it kills the live bacteria! The days I don't use it, they get straight city tap water!

Chlorine will not hurt the birds at all. But will reduce the effectiveness of some medications. As Val said it dissipates rather fast.If aireated it dissipates faster.

never use water with chlorine in it when using medication.
It took me several years to find this out and I lost many of my breeders.

hi guuys, I use straight well water. except when I medicate. I buy the bottled water in gallon jugs. Always keep a couple gallons on the shelf. I was told the well water has some calcium and lime that also decreases the effects of medications. Any thoughts on this?

Rudy, whats your take on the clorine disapating rapidly if it sets out! The only time I care is when I'm using pro-biotics! I could see it killing good bacteria! Thats why the city puts it in there isn't it?

I have a purify filter that purify the water at 0.5 microns, for us to drink and my birds ,the water in PR is bad the animals can drink tap but i give them the same water i drink.make me feel good knowing they drinking clean water like i am. the problem with bottle water is after 60 hours any water in containers that has no chlorine or is cold .gets bacteria from the plastic . and never put a bottle water in the freezer to drink.the plastic leaks out a chemical it was in the news a while back.. cancer update from John Hopkin.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Hey Val,
I use to raise tropical fish semi-commercial. Just drop a cheap aireator in it and it will disipate the chlorine in as little as 6 hours.

If you are worried...go to a fish store and for 1 dollar you can buy a bottle of chlorine remover....one drop per gallon.....and it works in an instant...my little bottle has lasted about years being used for my aquarium and my birds...I only use it when I medicate so the chlorine will not affect the medications.....but my city water guy said that it would not affect medications....either...because if that was the case...doctors would tell you not to drink tap water when you take your medication....anyway just a thought.....He stated that there is not enough chlorine to affect anything...fish yes...because it jacks up there gills....

He said that studies have been done on animals up to 10 parts per million of chlorine with no affects....it is hard to believe because your swimming pool is at just under 2 parts per million....but most taps will have 0-0.3 parts per million..that is not much....basically the closer you live the the water plant...the higher the concentration...most taps will be at 0-0.1 because the chlorine has disapated just moving through the pipes...and being stored in tanks with vents.....just get a pool test kit and test you water..takes two seconds...if it does not register on your pool kit..you are pretty safe...

or use the fish chlorine remover...just a drop and it works in an instant...

For one...DONT DRINK BOTTLED WATER>>>>Give me your email and I will forward you a power point on bottled water dangers....and what it does to the landfills, rivers etc and how many fossil fuels we use to make the damn bottles....anyway...LOL
