leave `em hungry for a day and then give them peas with just a small bit of wheat or milo. after a couple days they will get the hang of it. My birds will usually pick the peas out first on days I feed them a mix.

Maybe you could feed your different seeds seperatly for a few days! Let them get hungry, start with the peas first. They will probably like them once they get used to them! They just don't recognize them as a food source! Hunger is a good teacher!

I'm paying over $40/hundred lbs for austrian peas! $55/hundred lbs for cow peas! Only two type of peas availible around here! Are they worth it and how much to the mix do you guys use?

I feel kinda like I've been violated after a purchase! LOL

I have been using a mix this year with both peas in it. Been interesting to get the fly times down while using it.

If they are not eating the peas...they are not hungry enough. You can do one of two things....seperate the feeds and feed the peas first. Or...(what I would do) Is keep cutting the feed back until they eat everything. I feed my kit birds pellets instead of peas...and if they do not finish there grub when they come in from a fly..they are getting to much food.

I also fly on the yo-yo system, so the day before they fly they get 1 cup of 50/50 wheat milo for 20 birds...so they are damn hungry when they come in....so they eat everything..LOL! So basically on the day I fly any of my kit birds they get a full ration of mix (peas etc). Then on the rest days they get Wheat/milo and get cut back...so the next time the fly...they are real hungry and i never have an issue with them not eating all the grub...they even eat the dust particles from the pellets..

If they have always eaten peas before and then all of a sudden they stop...check the peas and make sure that they smell ok...no bugs etc...I have had my birds quit eating as much and I had noticed that the grain had soured a little bit..was still hard but had a smell....dumped the feed and bought some new stuff and all was good.

They should be eating the peas with the weather getting cold....they know that the peas, popcorn and other types of grains keep them warm. So just try the different methods and see what happens....hell try mixing pellets instead of peas. The pellets are loaded with protein....and vitamins and minerals....The salt content is irrelavent because you are cutting the pellets with other grains...so they are not getting as much sodium as you would feeding all pellets.

Some fliers in my area have switched to pellets in the mix instead of peas and noticed the same or better results and the peas are cheaper. I can give anybody my recipe for my kit bird mix that I mix myself. It took me a year or so to come up with just the right parts. Plus pellets are cheaper!

Ok..here you go...I mix 50/50 wheat and milo first...then I put five parts wheat and milo to 1.5 parts 24-28% pellets to 1 part sauflower. I just take a coffee can and mix the 50 50 wheat milo...then I get a scooper and scoop 5 parts wheat and milo and the use the scooper for the rest..and shake it all about and mix it real good. My birds get the mix on the fly day only...2 cups for 20 birds then the next day (rest) I feed 1.5 cups wheat and milo then the next day (rest) I mix 1 cup wheat and milo. Then open the door the next day and watch the show. If the birds feel light or it is cold..the get the same ration on the second day..except it is mix instead of wheat and milo...I also adjust the rations to the weather.

Hey Paul,Thanks

What kind of pellets are you using? The only pigeon checkers that I can get around here is just 15%protein and the wheat is only 9% or 10%protein. I'm always open for suggestions that might improve my kit, but as I'm only flying this years young birds time and patience will tell...
