Over the years I have noted the use of band numbers being mentioned to give value to the quality of a bird. You know, things like "this is the grandson to 5412" or "this bird is related to 514" and on and on. Does anybody care? Who goes out in thier lofts and remembers numbers of bands? It is probably just me....I don't know. The number of a band means nothing to me. All I want to know if the bird is a screamer or not; I don't give a rats butt about the band number; the color; the spread. The only thing I want to know is it a good performer and the color of its beak. Nothing else.

Nick,
When you know how a bird was made in the past you can go back and try to duplicate that knowing that it has been successful for that family of birds.
Because of this I like to know what a bird goes back to.

Breeding a bunch of out-crosses from different families can lead to many problems down the road. You are basically starting from scratch and this could take years to perfect.

Hey nick i agree with you but a lot of great breeders have this 1 famous bird that just produces like crazy or could have been the best kit bird they ever bred. The only way for them to remember the bird is the band # or #s. Some use names (RED HEADED HEN)& SOME USE #S (SIXTEEN). What other method can we use to remember a CHAMPION ROLLER????

P.S. I remember the band #s to 11 pairs that i used last year and how they were mated...

Ray,

How many birds that came from "514" where junk? Do you believe all birds from a certain band number or breeder are good?

That is all I am trying to say in my smart ass way. I at one time had a pure family from one of the super breeders and I hated them and they all went back to some important bird....they sucked. I even renamed them(LOL). For many years I thought it was my fault, but then I started to run into others that had the same problems with them. To this day I keep thinking about retrying them thinking it was me.

When people ask me anymore whose "family" I fly I will tell them "I don't know" and let them figure it out. They ain't getten any of them anyway(LOL).

Nick,
I agree.

IM talking about how the birds where made 4 to 7 generations back. Any farther back then that probably does not matter. Like you, I could care less if a bird went back to 514. That bird might be older then me...lol. But to some people that seems to mean allot. I do not like to bring in birds that have nothing to do with what I am breeding out of. I have done that in the past and bred great pigeons, but not without a cost to the family of birds down the road.

Hey Nick, my view is that "band numbers" represent "benchmarks". They indicate a level of quality and accomplishment by a certain bird in the eyes of a breeder or fellowship.

To say this or that bird is from such and such a band number merely indicates that the current stock descends from a quality bird existing at a point in time, bred by a certain individual.

Of course anyone should know that just because it is so, does not mean that everything on down from it will as good or better.

If anyone did not know, I am telling you now. So know you know. lol

OK
Just a thought. If a bird was good in the air, how long was it good in the air? We know some people will stock a bird after one or two seasons. At what point in the birds career was it great? Does this make any difference?

Another observation. One thread will speak of the length of time before a line is a breeders own, then in the same breath we speak of the birds they go back to. Which is it? Mine or yours?

Need Help
I need some help. About a year ago I acquired a bird from a local breeder in Los Angeles. The bird is banded 2000. I guess the bird was auctioned at the 2001 NBRC convention in Louiville because this is what on the band. The bird has # 17 on the band. I really want to know who bred this bird because I would like to thank him or her for breeding such a fine animal. Anything I breed this bird to throws out fire and I meen fire. Can anyone help?

If the band makes the bird roll.....then next year I am putting 3 bands on each leg....LOL!! Bands are there for what....record keeping.....origin of the bird.....pedigree.....and age......just like papers on your dog.....when we had goats we used to tatoo them with there number on the inside of the tail....with a tatoo gun....A goat tatoo would be DG48....some get tattooed in the ears. It is just a way for us humans to verify the ancestory, age and record keeping for our animals.

I mean...we even have birth certificates...but since some of us are smart...sorry nick..LOL we can recognize a person and know there name and verify that it is them on the birth certificate...LOL

Don't know what it's worth but I'll give it a shot.

Here is the family of descendents from the best cock I ever had. Talking about a 25ft-80ft aerial tornado out of the Plona family. Deep Red Tort (not very frequent though... average 15 to 20 turns but he kits they way a champion roller should.

Mated him to a superfast 15ft hen with exceptional velocity on the spin. They were my #1 pair!

Pair #1

Sire: Cock #423 Deep Red Tort/Grizzle
Dam: Hen #435 Tight Spin Blk/White Flights

Year 2005 Nestmates
Clutch #1
NBRC V300 Speckled Black
NBRC V301 Tortoise Shell -- Stocked

Clutch #2
NBRC V307 Tortoise Shell
NBRC V308 Black Grizzle

Hey Gotspin, it is very exciting to see when the matings work, to see where you were on target and just guessed right! LOL

I currently use PowerPigeon to track my breeding program and produce pedigrees. Works fairly well, but I would really like to see Jay complete his program and try it for awhile. It is designed for rollers.
