A rare color is any Birmingham Roller who spins fast and deep with great style. It is either ash red; blue; or brown or a combination of same. It is often marked with white. There are no other "rare" colors; stop your search and save yourself some headaches and money.

Deadendkid,

Why are you looking for rare color rollers? Are you interested in color or performance? With Birmingham Rollers performance should be our number one goal.

Dead,
Bro,cuz and new guy. If you just breed, you will get all of the colors you can possibly want. Each breeder, not pair each bird,CAN carry up to three colors and numerous variations and factors of the combinations of the colors it carries.

One pair can easily breed 8-9 different colors, factors and/or variations. Why try to limit your self to one particular trait of color when you can have the whole pallette?

The real reason we breed rollers is for performance. SHHHH don`t tell anyone.

Deadendkid, I won't be good at explaining this, but here goes! These "rare" color birds you are asking about, most likely have been cross-bred with another breed to get these "rare" colors! After you get the color, they breed it back for the roll. Some, if bred right, can be excellant rollers, but they are not "purebred"! You look for what you want to look at in your loft, you pay the feed bill! You will find good color birds! I would say, the majority of guys here, believe you are ruining the breed by crossing other breeds in just for color. Its been an ongoing debate since "rare" color birds showed up in this hobby, whether it is right or wrong, I guess only you can decide! Some seriously, hard feelings have been raised during these debates!

None of these comments were directed to you! Please don't take them that way! We just usually don't speak of color to much here just to keep these heated debates from starting, and a "civil war" getting started, you might say!

There are some color guys here and you will probably get your answer, but you might get a little sh^% too, so be thick skinned and hang in there! If you can get one of them to answer, maybe go to a personal email would be best! Its up to you!

Hope this makes a little sense, and hope I didn't screw this explanation up too bad!

I will keep what I believe, to myself!

Sure we talk about colour here, all the time,,,,,don't give him that line Val.I don't remember anyone ever being booted for talking colour. The reasons for talking colour is to to straighten newbies out and explain why NOT to breed for colour.
If you want fancy colours, get some other breeds. There are all kinds of cool breeds to have with beautiful colours. With Rollers it is best to breed for performance.Period.----------

Breed for Depth, Quality, Speed, Frequency and Control...REGARDLESS OF COLOR and you will do just fine!!

I am not a color breeder but I did have a couple of andalusians that I would put up against ANY birmingham roller.

Some are Purist and some are not...if you believe in PURE breds then that is your choice....just like me...I would NEVER buy a lab that was not pure.....but that is just me...no reason either...just makes me feel good...LOL

For the record, I don't mind colors and color breeding being discussed on this site, but just do so with the knowledge that others will hold an opinion that will disagree with yours.

Rather than run away like some brave souls have, hold your position and fight for the opportunity to present your opinions and views and do so in a respectful and friendly way.

Deadendkid,
Back to your original question which I reread ALL of it and it's clear you asked what are considered rare coloured birds! You never even mentioned Rollers.Hunh.Imagine that and here we were getting off on some other friggin tangent.
Anyways,,,,,why don't you Google search Middle Eastern Pigeon Breeds and see what you come up with.Swallow pigeons come in nice colours.Lebanons,Kelebeks,Shaksharli,Donek,Catalonians, the breeds are many and come in many different colours.

Deadend,

Sigh........you can disrespect the breed all you want to. You pay the feed bill so breed anything you want into the Birminghams, but don't call'em Birminghams; cause they ain't. I guess you can call them rollers if they roll.

(Moderated) Nick, I got more respect for you than you will ever have for me, and I know moderating you puts me down your list even more, but that comment can't stay up! I'm sorry!

DeadEndKid,

If you find a all PURPLE roller, all GREEN, all Orange roll, let me know, those are rare, almost as rare as hens teeth. If found let me know, I'm still missing mine an still looking for them. If found fly them hard!!

Paul,
Andy isn`t a color, its a factor of black. It`s a roller color and don`t let em tell you otherwise. I have a few andy`s that are really nice birds and one produces in kind. I am getting the kite over the andy off the Lavin and it is a cool looking bird. Looks fast, like it has a flamejob. Has the slick hard feather and deep keel from the lavin and the wider shoulders from the cheney. Feels like a softball. Rudy has one thats a straight andy. He said it rolls so hard it lands early. When it was developing it was an easy 20 25 feet.H and A pattern.

I have a lot of dark birds and saw a lot of interesting factors from them this year.
reduced self,andy,kite,check,bar,reduced bar,self,t pattern,baldie,griz,splash,tort and stork griz.

I got these patterns from black self on andy. t pattern black self on red check griz, and blue check on red mottle. Not to include a ton of red w/f/t`s and red checkers with barred tails and several patterns of griz.

With all of these birds in this array of colors why breed for anything specific. I am trying to assimilate the patterns and colors from my pairs that will red flag a bird as a potential "good" bird. I think it is an impossible task. There are way too many underlying mixes possible in the gene pool.

I like the swirls of colors as they fly low overhead, wings cutting the air in an irregular rythym as they pass. Butterfly wings on the cloudy heights.Looking up into a chorus of color singing the joy of flight.

ps I breed for performance based on the previous years performance/offspring

You'll find most roller men here are not into colors, just the roll and only the roll. The roll is everything here.

Velo, the bronzing, reddish hues, and andalusian color in your birds are from the Indigo gene. I've got an Andy hen from BMC and have experienced the same thing.

Indigo is black; andalusion is black; mahogany is red; and puce is baby poop greenish yellow, kind of. Lavender is blue; silver is blue; and grey is blue. Selfs are selfs; bars are bars; checks are checks; and everything else is a grizzle.

It just wares me out how we try to name a shade of a color a name different that the actual color it is; like it actually means something or even makes a difference.

What color is bronze? Is it a dilutted form of red? Pong Ping, Ping Pong, Gnop Gnip, Gnip Gnop.

I had better take my meds.

Steve UK,
Asked my opinion on rare colored rollers, knowing I would tell the truff! I don't want the kid to miss understand where I stand. It would be better to suck on an old mans Hemorrhoid than to have one of them Mongrel bred colored birds in your stock loft. Drowning in a drunkards puke, is like winning the lotto compared to owning a toy stencil. I hope I haven't left any doubt on my de stain for cross bred rollers on other breeds for pretty feathers.. Just my personal opinion of course.. KGB

Kenny, Kid,
Just for the record, Andalusian is actually a factor of Indigo...Spread Indigo....a spread ash red bird on an Indigo bird will produce it just as well as black and Indigo....just for the record.

Hey, Kenny!
Apparrently there are many who disagree with you on that. At the convention, after watching these Andalusians spinning in the air 30-40 feet with speed and quality, the bidding was fierce in the auction. They sold for $125-$200, including a cock that I pulled from my stock loft. If one is really serious about performance, color doesn't matter. If one is really serious about a "pure-bred" (if there is such a thing) agenda, then color does matter. I prefer performance. I don't care what color it is. And I believe that "pure-bred" is a figment of the imagination when it comes to rollers.
