I have a little hen which had it's leg mangled to the point of having to amputate it at the elbow.A Coopers hawk grabbed her through the 1/2" X1" wire floor of the kitbox.I've closed it in so no preds can get in under there now,and the bird has healed quite well but the poor thing has to lay down on one side to eat with the others in the kitbox. It's so crowded on the feed tray, you know how it is,eh.I'm wondering if anyone here has ever built a prosthetic leg for a handicapped bird before, and if so,how you did it.Tapp, got any suggestions for this one?No tattoos neccessary.LOL!----------

Kelly,

Is it mangled so bad you can't break it and reset it? I have done that with success and they heal remarkably quick and well.

Can you get a picture of it?

Yeah,it was pretty bad, like on a swivel at the joint. The leg is healed already what's left of it is a neat stump cut at the elbow.Maybe a guy could attach something there like peg legged Pete sorta for leaning on.Elastoplast dressing and a piece of wood?

I can contribute an eye patch and teach it to say "arrrgghhh me matey".

Seriously, try the leg splints, it might help keep it immobilized so it can get a chance to heal. Good luck Kelly.

I think the whole secret will be on how to attach it securily to the stump.

I wish you well with it, Kelly.

Thanks Nick.I think I'll try the elastoplast band-aid stuff.Sure I'll have to change it periodically but it should be interesting to see if it helps and if the bird will adapt.

Cull her and save yourself trouble from babying a bird. There are ton of good hens around.

I used the elasto-plast band-aid to attach a 2" piece of 3/16ths" dowling to what's left of her leg,and at first she was a little freaked out about having a piece of wood hanging off there but after a couple days she is used to it and it really does help her to stand on the feed tray and perch. Not to good on the wire floor as it pokes through, but, yeah!!Beats pigeon pie!!!!She looks like an old pirate now, kinda like her handler.Arrrr matey. It's a hard life at sea, boy!!!
YITS!!!

Kelly, I had a weins hen that was supper in the air lose a leg to the knee. It got it's band caught on a piece of wire floor. I flew her after it healed over. She still rolled well, but would haave trouble on my loft roof whitch is steel roof, on her kit box. I removed her and paired her up with a good cock. I'm flying out a pair of squeaks now. I'll breeed the heck out of her next spring! she has no trouble raising young. now she's in with all the hens. Top perch bird! has no trouble. there tuff!----------

Hi, I know a guy who used a straw to set one of his bird legs, that might work, It did for him and the bird got around just fine, hope this helps. Mark
