I'm trying to foster some eggs from one of my older cocks but they were laid on 10/10 and I just had another pair lay eggs today 10/18. Is this too far apart? Will the pair that just laid feed the young when they hatch? Please let me know.

I've had it work at 7 days but have never tried it at 8 days. 7 Days was pushing it I don't know that I would try 8 unless I was willing to risk loosing them.

Hey elopez, its too late! I never go past 3 days when I switch eggs. My fosters will sit an extra couple of three days, after that, they get off the nest.

Obviously timing the egg switch is critical. Good luck on the next round of eggs.

What up Spanky,

How are you birds doing? Hope your not losing to many of them. We are going to have to hook up one of these days to fly the birds.

Spanky,

Looks like I picked the wrong one. Dave is flying it and said it hasn't turned over yet. Looks like I should have got the nestmate...

It was bad for me again today. Lost 2 from my #3 and 1 from my #2. I'm going to fly less days, it's getting pretty bad for them, I have coopers attacking them in every direction...

elopez,
I first have to ask you this? which one laid first the fosters or the breeders? reason I ask is its a major deal. if the fosters laid first it wont work been way to long and the milk just isnt there at the right time. No if the breeders laid first pull the eggs daily and mark them. Keep them in a cardboard egg carton not a styrofoam container. Turn them twice a day until the fosters lay. Now you can keep the breeders eggs up to 3 to 4 days but you will be pushing it 7 days but I have had some survive after 7 days. Keep the egg carton in the house where its nice and cool. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Now once the fosters lay there first egg pull the fosters egg and put in the breeders egg. And same thing with the second egg as they lay it. Since the egg is marked you will be able to tell which one is the foster egg and which is the breeders egg.
I don't like using the foster laying first over the breeders I just have some problems with that. Now I will tell you something that happen to me on my last round. I had a pair of breeders that had hatched there babies and they were 4 days old. Well the hen passed away and I didn't want to stress the cock any more so I pulled the babies from the cock and placed them under a foster pair who didn't even have any babies or eggs ready to hatch. The parents took care of them and they are healthy as horses today. You will be surprise what they guys can do when they have too.
Best of luck

Hello Brian,

The breeders laid first. My brother had a pair foster some eggs that were around 15 days apart and had no issues with them. I guess it just depends on the birds... Im taking the chance and switched the eggs. Hopefully I won't have any issues....

Thanks,
