This cock in the doorway is king of the loft with the hen behind and 2 young to the right.
This pair haven't had the breeding urge yet.
Having a snack on the lawn.
young at 2 weeks.
young at 6 weeks.
Hen.
This breed is very gregarious and easy to tame. Can be herded around the yard with a long bamboo stick.I haven't pushed the young ones to fly yet and the 2 pair of breeders I have are to valuable to risk trying to fly them.Paid $180 for that black bald cock and $80 for each of the other 3 and had them shipped from Toronto,Ontario. The gentleman who sent them to me has been flying Doneks since he was 6 years of age in Greece and is a great mentor and pretty nice guy as most pigeon nuts are. Will be nice to get some of this breed flying and hope to have a loft full of 'em by next summer. Beautiful Birds! What is a Donek? Is that a breed, strain or color?

Thanks guys. Doneks are a breed originally bred in Greece,Turkey and Macedonia and have been imported to Canada and the U.S. by immigrant fanciers mostly from Greece. They are a spinning, diving bird, best flown in small kits of 2 or 3 and said to be crafty at avoiding BOPs.Flying in small groups will attract the hawks alot less than what my poor ol birmies do,I'm hoping. These birds came from Pavlos Giannoulis who lives in Toronto and I know he imported at least one of the strains of Doneks he has in his loft from Greece as eggs and hatched them out. With the 4 birds he sent me there are 3 families as the 2 reds are from different family strains so I have a good gene pool to work with. That's a 4 X8 loft with a flypen on the outside of what has been my feed and tool shed.Over the winter I'll put a 6 X8ft loft in beside it for the Doneks to expand the flock. This is my favourite loft in the yard as I can sit in there out of the West Coast sunshine(RAIN!!)and watch the birds with music and the works!! ---------- Kelly

I want to fly year round. Here is my plan...If there is anyone that knows how I can get some of these please contact me. Locking down my rollers for 6 months is a drag...but this seems to be a good way for me to get my kicks in the off season. To my knowledge, there is no one in the United States that raises these. Again, let me know if there are any leads to get some.

Andrew, Thanks for dragging these pics back up to the front.I never would have had the patience to look for them. And thanks for the comments.Maybe I should show them at the fall show in Lake Cowichan, ehh?! Hey Keith.Keep on those FORS guys, ehh!!I found a guy in Alberta who has some and he is sending some out here to the coast for me around the 15th of May.Not Husband bloodline but also have a guy in Cali sending some of those later in the season. He said he'll only charge me for the vet check and shipping. There are some real good people in this hobby,no doubt. Another comment about the Donek birds I have;I've lost 2 to the henery since jan 1st.They were inexperienced and young ones.Once they are adept at flying they are crafty little devils.Just like puppy dogs in the loft and on the ground too.If their tongues were longer I'm sure they would try to lick my hand!!I need some Tipplers to get them to elevate tho, after trying for weeks to get them to go higher by using a roller to fly with them(the rollers don't work)I kicked the whole bunch out last night together and to my surprise,up they went to about 500ft.What a show and when I put a dropper out YES!!!!!!whooooooooooo!!!they were diving and corkscrewing like they are supposed to.Finally, some success.I am a happy camper now. ---------- Kel. Doneks are available all over the US. Google "DONEK" and see what you come up with... cannot testify to quality of anyone's birds but they are not a hard breed to acquire... quality on the other hand is always difficult to guarantee.

kel how old are they now..about 6 Month...they look real nice ,I'm was trying to get FOR, but the man said he don't have any this year, the man I'm talking about have the good one's;; They are ppl who have these Doneks and FOR anywhere but if you want quality you have to be careful who you deal with, they have guys using them for show quality and guys using them for performing quality and thats what I'm talking about performance. those Doneks are really nice..good luck with them..have fun.. ---------- Ralph....

Ralph, The oldest in the bunch of YBs is 7 months down to 2 1/2 months. They start diving young if you get em up there. It's the corkscrew affect you have to be patient forAlmost let them get too high tonight I was worried they would'nt drop when it was taking a minute but when they did wooohee, they all follow the lead bird in these fast spiral dives( good for avoiding The henery) a couple hundred ft above the loft tonight 2 of them collided in their dive and it looked like a hit from a falcon with at least 50 feathers floating down.No kidding, was looking around for the SOB but it wasn't his fault for once!!! Raf,if you want a better chance at getting some good FORs,get on the forum and join the club. You'll get birds before someone not in the club. Salud, Kel. Rum-30 Lofts
