At this point, I plan to start with rollers in the Spring. Can anyone recommend a training or practice routine? I've never had performance birds before so any advice would be appreciated.
I'm guessing it isn't just a matter of opening the gates and then they all take off, kit & spin the way I want. So how do I get the best performance out of my birds? I'm looking for basic step-by-step instructions. Tell me how you get the best out of yours...
Also how long do the birds need to be settled in before I start training? 4-6 weeks? More?
If there are any books or articles I should read about kit training, please let me know.
Thanks in advance! ~Karen

Karen, Welcome to the site, I would suggest that you search through the archives. Almost everything you could wish to know will be there, then if not ask away! There are a lot of very nice people here willing to go the extra to help.

Hi Karen, glad to have you with us. Like Thom said look in the archives. Each flyer has his own way to get the best out of their birds. So ask away.(questions that is). As for settling your birds. I do it in about 1 week, if the birds are young. If they are older birds I give them about 2 weeks. And always keep them HUNGRY. Thats the trick. Feeding plays a BIG part in how your birds will fly.If you can visit a flyer, GO and pick his/her brain. See how things are actually done, and ASK all the questions you have. Hope this helps alittle.

Welcome Karen! You might want to go back to the main page and click on the "Reading Room" heading, right above the page numbers! Several good articles in there that I think you would find beneficial! Tony (site owner) also has several books in his products store!
Other than that, like Tom said, most any subject on rollers could be found in the archives, if you go back and skim through them! Beside the reading room heading, there is RPDC search! Its like a word search!
Feel free to just ask away here on a post also, someone will always help!
Just some ideas! Once again, welcome! ---------- Val

Karen, Welcome to the site and I think most of these guys got you set up right! There is a lot of usefull information on previous threads! Karen, what family of birds will you be flying? I believe that plays a role as well, I would ask the person that sold you your pigeons if they can tell you how they do it since they should know the birds already! Good Luck! ---------- Sal Ortiz

Spitfire...are you Stand Arnold?
Karen, Welcome. If you are not purchasing birds from Tony, which I think you should, to start with good birds that will please you, then try to find a fancier and a breeder in your area that is near by to get birds from him/her and become your mentor. Mentoring is very important to new comers to this hobby. There are allot of good articles on this site to get valuable information. Also join the NBRC as soon as you become serious and you will receive their bulletin which have allot of good articles. Also Google "Roller Pigeon" and you will get allot of information.

Thanks guys!! Lots of helpful info to start with here. Much appreciated.
I did sign up for the NBRC so I can get the directory & bulletin. I'm also planning to attend @ Sturbridge in December and maybe Faircount in Nov. to see if I can meet people and get a look at some lofts & setups for Rollers.
I have met some local folks who do racing which is great but not quite what I'm interested in. Also met some people who do showing but that's not quite it for me either.
Not sure where I will end up getting my birds from yet. I like the idea of being able to see them up close and watch them perform before I buy. But then again Tony's birds have a great reputation and I know I couldn't go wrong with those! We'll see...
In any case I am just doing research now and figuring out what to build and where before I get any birds. Thanks again!!

Karen,
Step 1. Make sure your birds are settled before you start releasing them.
Step 2. Do not over feed them.
Step 3. Keep them secure and dry. A wet invironment is the enemy to good bird health and it will also deteriorate the lofts or kitboxes.
Step 4. Fly them often
Step 5. Tweek your plan until you get the performance level you desire.
This will get ya started. We need more females in this roller hobby. Find a serious breeder/flyer near your home and pick his brain; keep what works for you and throw out the rest.

Hi again folks. Been busy @ work and not much time to check in...
Again I appreciate all of your helpful info. And Tony - thank you for the offer! Wow!
I was excited to get my NBRC intro package yesterday. Packed with great articles! And looking through the archives here I am finding lots of great ones too. Also many pictures of excellent birds and lots of advice.
I am hoping to find some lofts to visit soon. You're all correct - it is one thing to read many articles. But I do hope I can see some demonstrations as well, and see good birds in action.
