I have never produced one from my stock. Starfire from Canada has been breeding them for years. Perhaps if he comes around he can comment.

I think Hector C. has some, right Hector? Sorry if I am confusing you with someone else.

I have bred Pensom rollers for 40 years and have never bred one. Bruce Cooper never bred one, either has Herb Sparkes. All of the Pensom guys that I know never bred a topnotch outside of Ralph Hilton (which I believe was crossed). Just my opinion!

Mike Miravia is the only guy that bred rollers into the top notch birds but they are crosses.

I am playing around with the crest,i got mine from 3 diferent people, all diferent from each other.
The newest one i got will blow you guys away,Especialy Tony.
A few months ago a friend of mine whent to Sal Estradas House,he called me the next day and said Sal had some crest,so i called him all exited. He wasnt as exited to know the news was out.The birds he bred where directly out of Norm Reeds birds.the diference is that they have a front notch on ther forehead,as soon as i have a chance ill post it in this site,he gave me one so im going to mate it with one of my crest.

Yeah, I know a few years ago, I think I remember him getting some birds from Norm and mixing.

I did not know why, he told me he went too far away from his stuff, I think he was just seeing what else was out there.

I'll call him and find out.

Hey Hector,

How are your crested rollers coming along? Have you been able to add control to them? Or are you still getting them too hot?

Are you still flying? or have you locked down?

If it looks like a horse then it probably is a horse..Now, if it looks like a horse, is it a cutting horse?.. Thats where the performance and breeding come into play.

A roller is just that. BUT, is it a good roller?..Breeding and performance will dictate that question!

If in your pursuite towards better performance and a crest pops up that is one thing; if you are pursueing crested birds that is another.

I think we have people in here pursueing the crest which makes no sense. The Birmingham Roller is a performance breed; nothing more and nothing less. If you want to pursue the crest please find another breed....you can do this, it is okay. Put the roller down and step away; those other breeds have thier own sites.....just keep buying your supplies here.

Damn!

Nick

PS - I think the crest was introduced into the Birmingham after the fact. I believe the breed used was the Komorner Tumbler, but it was done just decades ago; keeping in mind the Birmingham is centurys old.....that is what I believe which has nothing to do with facts.

I became interested in the crest just a few years ago.
I dont know what the problem is, most of us breed for some kind of body tipe or look.some breed verry small birds others have birds on the heavy side, but its a caracter we chose to follow.Ive seen crested Homers from Belgium, ive seen wild commies at Laughlin Nevada ,ther is a hole family that live at a casino parking lot i thnk they got it from inbreeding becouse there wasnt new birds in the decert,i dont know.
I have a Crest that comes out of 2 pure Norm Reed birds and i dont think he crossed them with anything.
I dont breed for crest but im breeding fast deep crest to fast deep crest and they happen to produce crest, whats wrong with that?

Hey Hector,

I think your crested birds look good and they must be doing their job, since you came in first for the SGVS club flys.

If my family of birds produced a crest, and it performed to my expectations, I would stock it as I would any other. I don't care, crest no crest, color... I'm just looking for the best bird I can stock to make them just that much better.

Nick,
Your pursuit of perfection is admirable. But don't you think that other people can find beauty in something as simple as a few feathers turned the wrong way and still breed for the performance. And I know you feel the same way about breeding for color. Actually it is another challenge in breeding a wonderful bird. My birds are locked down right now, will be for a while. I am using this time to figure out how to get the best performance out my color birds. I will probably have one color bird in every pairing next year.
Am I driving you nuts yet. Good. See when you try to tell us, dictate to us, to get out of rollers, you are way out of line. And you feel I am way out of line. But I don't try to tell you that you have to try this color bird.
So, would you please give the guys some slack.
Gregg.

Hey KGB. Nah, I'm not going to play. But I've got a sweet little Don Oulette bred bronze grizzle that I'm using that throws a bit of a slippered foot. Doesn't seem to bother her youngsters in the air performance wise. Actually have a bit of that here and there in the loft. It pops up from all of them crosses. Smile. And I did email Don, she is a double granddaughter off of his old stud cock. She crosses nicely with my birds.

Good Post Greg.

If you could choose one of two birds that were identical in the air and cage, but one was a blue check self and the other was a blue grizzle w/s baldy, which one would you choose?

elopez,
Don't know where your going or why? If both are equal and by that you mean great in the air performance wise and you wanted more grizzles, I'd mate them to each other provided they are opposite sex. Lay some more information on here and I'll get back to you Monday.
Gregg.

Greg,

Sorry for not being clear enough.. What I meant to state is that If I had two birds that were equal in performance and I could only stock one, I would prefer the better looking one (the blue grizzle)

Hi Gregg,
I will breed 4 rounds with one cock then another 4 rounds with the other one. Then you will see which of the two produce the best ones. No two birds are the same, even if they are brothers they are not the same. First go for the quality then everything else comes in place.

I'm gething some nice colors on my birds and not even trying. If you see the parents they are not preety. I also change pairs after 4 rounds so I always get new colors.
