I dont start tinkering with the feed until they are about a year old. Second season flying. Some might be 9 or 10 months, but still second season and are rolling well enough to still be in a kit and surviving the first round Cull draft.

Mix will always have a place in your arsenal of feed weapons. You can use it to get them in shape before a fly, switch to w/m a week out and totally refine thier performance in the last few days before the fly.
If you have it,you can find ways to use it. Healthy happy birds are good performing birds.

Quantity vs quality vs performance is a balance each man finds on his own.
I mix 5 cups of seed every day for 5 different boxes. I use 2 mixes, pellets and 3 different kinds of seeds. It`s all just a constant juggling act. Find out for yourself, then tuck it right under that hat of yours.

My young birds get the mix until they start rolling...not flips..actually rolling about 5-10'...then they get bumped up to a more active team and start flying every other day and then they only get the mix on the fly day and wheat/milo on the rest day...with a cut ration involved...if it is real cold..they get the mix no matter what...just less....performance will suffer...but I don't mind as long as they are keeping warm.

As far as young birds...keep the mix to them...they are young and still growing...so they need all the vitamins and extra grub....kind of like your teenage kid....eating you out of house and home....they are growing and so are your birds...when they really start pulling the pin that is where you tweak the feed. My birds on average...get mix everyday...for at least..the 7-9 month mark...then it is mix every other day...and then after a year...they will get mix every third day

My old birds even get the mix...they get the mix on the fly day and then rest rest with either mix or wheat/milo on the second day based on how they feel in the hand...to light and they get the mix on the second day until they feel good in the hand...just remember..a healthy and happy birds is a bird that likes to roll.
