"Those most seriously afflicted with loft blindness not only can't see any faults in thier own birds, they besmirch anyone who dares imply his birds aren't perfect. These are the poor sports that question the abilities of any judge who has the misfortune to not declare them the winner of any competition they enter. Eventually these severly loft-blinded individuals resort to flying thier rollers strictly "for thier own enjoyment". This self-enforced isolation unfortunitly only increases thier loft-blindness. Oftentimes these individuals will start misusing the term "True" when describing Birmingham Rollers; implying thier own birds exemplify "true" performance and that everyone else's rollers are not true, in other words, they really don't measure up to thier same mythical standard.

Avoid these people like the plague when seeking advise with your own rollers. Don't ever forget the adage about the "blind leading the blind". (Flying the Birmingham Roller by Dave Gehrke)

This is what happens when you don't judge your birds through the eyes of others. You begin to rely only on your own opinion as to the worth of your pigeons. Your friends and relatives ain't gonna be honest with ya with critisism. You get the best help via competition with a judge who has been chosen on his own merits.

Do we know anyone who may be suffering from "loft blindness"? I do..........

Nick, it happens but let's be careful and not paint all backyard fanciers with one stroke of the 'loftblind' brush. Do you really need others to tell you how good your birds are? Maybe you have good birds but can't get a handle on managing them?
Whatever it is I wish you luck and hope you get it all figured out so that you can get back to enjoying the birds.

If after all the years you have had rollers if you need some one to tell you weather you have good birds or junk, i think you should find another hobby. but i dont think thats it, its just that you dont like people that will not fly in your little bird contests. we have to do what you like or you toss in your little digs. So from now on i wont read any thing with your name on it, because what good is it you need some one to tell if your birds are any good. How could i learn any thing from you

just a back yard flyer giveing you a little back

You answered your own question and evidently are too consumed with loft blindness to see it.

You said "As long as you been raising rollers..."
Nick didn`t say he needed someone to tell him anything, especially your childish remarks.
Read it again.

Nick,
Yes, I can definitely say that I know of a few guys who like to refer to certain families, namely their own, as the "True" Birmingham Roller! LOL!

If I was flying in my backyard and someone was bad mouthing my birds. like they arn't the right type, there the wrong color. They roll like a rag On,and on and I had no intenisions of flying comp. and I enjoyed, and loved my birds.I would punch the bad mouther out so bad he'd go home with swelled up blind eyes! But I fly comp. and like to here what the judge and others have to say! Good and bad.

Nick,

How TRUE, :) My sight is poor, I see all the bad stuff it my loft. But my vision is clearing up slowly. I get to go see the eye doctor next week. Maybe he will help me see other people birds roll better then mine. That won't take much, hahahaha My goal is just to catch up with everyone else. Now that is called the blind leading the blind in my book.

Nick,

I know what you are up to!!! Shall I call you a stinker(lol).

I compete twice a month during the spring and summer. I don't need a judge to tell me which bird is wing twiching, and which one is an x winger and what is their quality and frequency and their depth. Neither I want a judge to count how many breaks they made because I can count form 1 to 20 without doing a mistake by utilizing my toes when counting my fingures. WhenI get time for comps, I will have the jodge do the dirty work for me for 20 min.

Loft blindness is just that, you can be a competitor and still be a loft blind. Egos and stoberness have to do alot with it. Think about it...

Nick,

Normally, I am a lurker here but, I have to agree with you and Jerry. It seems in everything that "someone" has all the answers.

I told Jerry about this not long ago. For a few years I competed on the Competition BBQ Circuit. Spent lots and lots of time practicing my recipes and technics. Sometimes cooked 4 times a week (a brisket takes about 14 hours) and tweeked and tweeked until we started winning contests.

Taking all of that into account I ran out of apple wood which I use on one of the meats. I asked a competitor next door if I could buy a couple of sticks of his apple to which he very politely offered to me for free. I used two sticks of his apple and the majority was my own hickory and cherry.

When we won the category the neighbor started telling everyone how he "coached" me and "taught me" how to win. By the time we won that particular contest we had already been winning consistently and my "coach" had never won a contest. Oh.... and he always complained about how he was treated and the rules were unfair. But he taught me how to cook :)

Kinda the same thing in my eyes. I got my stock birds from one gent in our area. If I were to compete in the future and did any good at all it would be a tribute to him. Not to someone who looks at the bird standing still and tells me what to do with it or what is wrong with it.

I learned a long time ago to listen only to those that have done well in whatever I am attempting to learn. Then when I find that one person or two I listen very carefully. Everyone else is just another friendly conversation.

Nick, I agree,
Larry

I am not a good example of following this but it has helped control my Marine Corps mouth.....occasionally!

"Those who criticize us are the unpaid guardians of our souls,
If...what they say is true, do something about it,
If not....remember their opinion was unsolicited and they have been paid exactly what it was worth......nothing!"

I know I have a long way to go with my birds, but from were I started I've come a long way also.I'm somewhere in the middle when it comes to competitions vs.Hard backyard flying.I've seen uncalled for disrespect and hellacious High fives .
On another note, when it comes to pigeons"you cant keep them all",so you need to know when to clear house and for what reason.Even though comps weren't going to happen this year for me,I have flown and culled harder than I ever had.I have a good grasp of the overall picture, when time allows I will be back at the comps with a vengence...Aloha,Todd
