Hi guys,

When you breed your birds and get a really exceptional bird in both flying and looks, do you risk flying it or do you put it in your breeding program?

You lock up your best birds especially in America where the bops are in large numbers at the moment.
Only use the birds that have proven themselves in the sky for at least 18 months to 2 years before being chosen to grace your stock loft.

Ed,
It depends on whether you want to compete, and whether you want to win. You can't win squat by stocking everything that shows quality. And it depends on the situation...where your located, BOP problems....time of year, and maybe most importantly, the status of your breeding program. If you have several pairs of solid producers, no big deal. Fly it. If you are still scraping together a pair or two that can produce, you may have to stock it. Same thing for a competition kit. If you have a solid kit of 20 old birds you might stock it. If not, you will have to fly it. But basically, speaking, if you are not "forced" into it by the need to come up with a few good breeders, you gotta fly 'em for at least two years to know what you've got. Some of those "great" birds at 6-9 months will go stiff...some will quit kitting well...some will increase in speed and depth; some will get worse....If you are a back-yard flyer it's hard enough to stay focused as it is. Personally, if I couldn't fly my birds, I'd get a show breed. These are a performance breed and they should be flown. So there is no "pat" rule......right or wrong. It depends on your circumstances. Simply ignore those who would tell you otherwise.
JMHO,
Cliff

Nice post cliff.

Also, for me the most rewarding part of watching ANY persons kit are the best performers in that bunch, so pulling the best would deteriorate the quality of the kit.

Stock it. Or years later your stockpen will be filled with sterile breeders and you will have to buy more to replace them.

Todd,
In the 70s, everyone flew there stock birds.
You could fly everything, year round and not worry about it.
It must be nice to live in a place where you can open up the doors and fly the best.

THE GOOD OL DAYS......lol

Good post Cliff, I haven't flown my A team sinse the 25th oct. But when I see a day I Think i can ,I'll fly. all my 07 birds are out of young pairs. So I'll have the makers in the loft for a few years. I will fly the best in the W/C, Like you said about winning. You can't win if all the good one's Are locked up. I'll bet most lofts you go to you see only the medeoker birds. The rest are locked away at 6 monts. But if your dealing with the air Devil you don't have much choise, I'll take my chances usless it gest down right bad. I've lost two excellent stock birds trying to fly in the W/C and One 14 bird kit due to hawks and making them over fly! But to be in the top Ten your going to have o fly. To be #1 you damn sure have to fly them, Not stock every Damn one. JMHO PS you'll run out of Lofts! I know a lot of "talk" from a nobody! But you will see!
