What are the benefits and disadvantages of breeding two birds from the same strain. Compare to only breeding best to best regardless of relationship and strain.

I have seen many pedigrees that are very jam up using only the same birds.

Start with the best birds you can get, breed them and breed the best to best among this group, before you realize it, you have a pedigree that looks "jammed up" but is in reality the best to the best among a family strain.

If you need to regularly mix family's to get good birds, what does this tell you about the genetic material you are working with or your understanding of it?

I like to breed within the family I have because over the years I have learned how to get from them what I want. If I regularly mixed family's I don't feel the same confidence level that I could get what I want with any reliability.

Starting with the right group of birds and becoming a "student" of the gene-pool, I feel is a more rewarding and satisfying experience than constant serendipity.
