What do you guys think of the plastic coated bands? I’ve only used plain bands, are those coated bands durable?

I know some don't like them but I do. Easier to scrap the crap off so you can read them.

I use plastic coated for my last year. I have some birds that are 7 years old and the plastic is breaking. I have a 15 year old cock with a aluminum band that looks good still.

Not a fan. In fact, I don't know if it is just me, the bands can water corrupt, and I have had a few crack. I prefer the aluminum style bands. Call me crazy, I think the band should last longer than the bird...LOL

I agreed MILO

I thing my 7 year old band will not last any longer. The good thing was that I was able to put a second band on the other leg with my information. This will last another 7-8 years.

I've been using plain aluminum and plastic coated
bands for awhile now, but now using plastic coated
bands. Got some birds that are 5-6 yrs old and the bands look like new, they're easier to read as well.

I prefer to use the big plastic bands. I have used them for a good many years. I have had maybe one or two crack. But those little bands gets filled with poop and you scratch and scratch to look at the numbers and before long you cant read it. I have been using the plastic bands since 94 and still to this day. I hate the little bands because it takes so much more light and you have to scrap them to read them. Just my opinion but I perfer the big bulky ones over the tiny little metal ones. Now the rings that have just the number cut out of them like the W/C bands a few years back I hate. They get filled with crap and you scratch them out and the color comes out of the number and before long you wear out the etching. So I guess its the choice of the fancier.

Hey Brian, glad to see you back. Been a while.

I use the plastic bands, but only because I have had better luck keeping them on the little ones. I have tried the bigger coated bands but ended up with a lot of babies running around without bands cause they lost them in the nest. I also hate digging thru the nest to find lost bands.

Butch,

This might help you, I had the same problem but with the plastic bands you can get a better grip on the band and hold on to it easier so it makes it a little easier to put on. So I band a little later then the norm and haven't had any problems. Also if you forget to band a couple you can moisten the band and get them on the bird as long as they aren't too old. I had measured the inside of the plastic and metal bands and they are very close. Because every year the bands isn't the exact same size. I mean within a few .01". So its not the plastic bands are bigger in the middle. So it must be the ease of holding the band and pulling it on.

Thanks Brian. Maybe I`ll try them this year. If I do I`ll keep in mind to just plan on letting them get a little bigger before I band them.

I like the plastic coated. My birds are banded about 50-50 with small and big No.s I can't read the small one's and you have to carry a tooth brush to brush them to read them. Then I have to change glasses! what a hassel! I'm going to all plastic coated. Like Brian M. aid just wait a while longer to band Fadding eye sight sucks!
