Hey All, What are the indicators you use to determine the sex of young birds. Excluding the laying of eggs of course!!! ;-)

Well one method would be sexed-linked factors like the black ticking in an Ash Red bird carrying Blue indicating it is a male. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

When I heard this one from Kelly, I thought it to be a joke, but I'm having pretty good percentages at this!
Check the poop chute when their about a week old, hold the bird right side up, if you are seeing a smile, its should to be a cock, a frown, and it should be a hen!
Anyone else tried this? I'm hitting at least 80% acuracy with this method! I'm gonna keep testing this idea till something better comes up!
Alright, the heckling can begin! ---------- Val

Hey All, Tony, I have a very nice hen with the ticking, and by the by, it's one of yours. :-) Val, I tried the smile thing, maby I just didn't get close enough!! Magnets, how does that work Pat? Pensom, indicated head shape, keel length, and feather quality. I can't seem to tell much difference in the very young. Have the birds evolved since his time or am I just to dumb to be able to see the difference? I appreciate the input, thanks all!!!

Hey Guys,
Try this and see what you think. Tie a paper clip to a piece of string about 4 inches long. Holding the string by the end and as still as possible dangle the paper clip about 1/4 to a half inch above your birds lower back. If the paper clip swings back and forth it's Male, in a circle it's Female. Try it!!
Try it on the inside of your wrist and your wife's wrist it does work.

Hey Thom, now that is very interesting about a hen having the black ticking. Now don't be confused between "black" ticking and what sometimes are small "greyish" or tiny "smudge" type markings that can be confused for black ticking in a hen.
I have hatched well over 2000 birds from this family and have never actually had an Ash Red hen with black ticking.
However, saying that, last year I would have never believed that the Ruby Rollers could have a solid black self, well they did and since then I have produced less than a half dozen! I suppose anything is possible! lol
If you could provide me the band number of the parents, I would be very interested to know what Ruby pair is capable of producing a hen with black ticking.
I know that Frank Mosca (bluebar) might have a genetic reason why an Ash Red hen carrying blue would display black ticking.
I am curious because I use this as a 100% marker to know if a bird I ship out to a customer is a cock.
Thom, might you provide a picture of this bird? I am really curious! LOL

Probably need Greg to jump in here, but an ash red hen can't "carry" blue......what you see is what you get (red) ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Another method(never tried it with real young birds still in the nest but seems accurate with birds already flying)is to feel the vent with your finger. The vent on hens is generally larger than with cocks. BTW,what do I need to do to be taken seriously around here???LOL!!! ---------- Kelly

Kel, Not sure about the "finger" method that you are using!... I think that there are safer, more easy ways to find out...Maybe not as satisfying tho..LOL

Hey All, Tony, I had never heard the term smudge before. Looking at the marks I am seeing using that term seems more appropiate then ticking. I am posting several views so you can see what I am talking about. Her band no is RUBY-MO-06-202.

Robby, I tried the string and paperclip and it sure seems to work. I let my wife hold the string and I held the bird. That way she could not unconsciously influnence the out come as she did not know which bird was a cock or hen.
Thanks, Thom

Hey Tony, There was never a question about this hen. I have eight of her young flying now. My question or comment was about the marks that look ticking but are most likely smudges. I was not aware of the difference until now. What of any other colored bird, how do you tell the sexes then?
Thanks, Thom

Hey Thorn,it works the same way as Double R mentioned with the string and paper clip, I use amagnet instead, a oldtimer taught me that one and I had pretty good luck with it! Pat
