About once a month I put some in thier feed toughs and throw a hand full on each kitbox. The breeders have it in front of them all of the time.

I feed flyers twise a month grit.
My breeders 2 times a week when breeding and every day before pairing them up.
I think one of my birds die from eating too much grit so I don't like leaving grit any more 24/7.

Grit is kept in front of all birds at all times. 24/7 for 365 days a year.
Quickspin, I have seen pigeons die from not getting enough grit. I have seen pigeons eat large amounts of grit because they did not receive enough grit in their daily diet, and then wildly over stuff themselves when fresh grit was put before them. Just observations seen in my travels.
Again, I pay the bills. I do what I want

All the years before I always gave them grit 24/7 365 days also.
This bird that I had was my flyer for two years and my best one in the air. Every time I feed them grit he will finish all I mean all the one I had put for all the 20 birds in the kit. I mouve him to my breeders in a open loft and there I had plenty of grit. He never stop eating grit he die the same day. I never had the same problem only with this bird. He love grit and he die eating it.
All birds need grit but I control the amount given to them.
Grit aint expensive and I always have it.

Grit is essential for pigeons as they have a high mineral requirement.A good grit mix aids in the digestion of food and helps hens maintain healthy calcium levels(very inportant for strong healthy egg production). Grit should be kept in the loft or kit box at all times or given at least 3-4 times a week.
Pigeons not fed grit mixture soon develop digestive problems!!

At least once per week i put a cup of grit to a gollon of feed and mix it in then feed my kits thier rations they will ussually not consume all the grit even if they are on a pretty tight ration.

Sal, Was this question asked in a questionable manor, or in a way that you were just asking to see what others were doing?...Or, did you want to see, so you could follow suit like RUUDDDYYYY has decided to do?

My birds have access to grit all the times, and my breeders get oyster shells before and during breeding season. Remember it IS essiential for their degistive system. Thats why, if you let your birds land on the ground and they pick at the ground. They are getting some kind of grit in their system. Because of a LACK of it. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

The same goes for Wheat, Milo, and Peas. Different family’s have different intake.
Some will eat the shingles off your roof. And different members of the same family will have different needs.
That’s what makes this sport interesting. Someone can give you all of the answers to the puzzle, but we still can’t solve it.
Too many variables & what IF’S
What works at my house will not work at your house. Same feed, same birds,,, BUT different results. My birds stink, your birds suck. NOPE,, Just different management.

If you leave grit in your kit box you will find that your birds are quenching their hunger consuming it. They will eat it all you can give them. You will not be able to fly them correctly and they are always thirsty. They will have trouble trapping because they feel full.
I mix a small amount of red grit with their feed every now and then. Sometimes when they still acting extremely hungry after their feeding especially when I am cutting their feed on a daily basis to bring them to ground zero, I will give them just a little after their feeding.
