I had a hen lay 3 eggs and just for the heck of it I let her sit all 3 and she actullay hatched all of them but was only feeding 2 of them so I moved the one baby to a pair that I let sit on dummies and they have been feeding it what I was wanting to know is did I do the right thing by keeping the weaker of the 3 alive?

The good thing is that you foster the young one fast, he will not be weak there after.

Some times I have a problem when my breeders don't feed them when they are 1 month old they do seem weak and usually stay very small. I now cull them right a way, I think less than a month of hatching you will be ok.]

My opinion only.

I am going to give it a chance and see how things go in my kit box with this bird and if this bird does turn out to be a cull next time I will not be so quick to foster it so I guess we will see thanks for the info at least I will have a time frame and what to look for!! Thanks alot

That's pretty strange a hen laying 3 eggs.Betcha that egg was from some other bird.Watch the colours you end up with out of the 3.

alright I will watch the colors. I do breed open loft
but I only have 2 pair right now and I have 3 extra hens that I have to get mates for so I will be breeding out of 5 pair when it is all said and done maybe I will be able to fill a box a little faster that way....

I am out the loft every night when I get home so some young birds hatching will NOT go un noticed

I was just talking about this the other day with my friend. He breeds open loft. He says he would never write a pedigree, as he could never guarantee it's authenticity. He says he has seen so much stuff in the open loft, that he questions the backgrounds on almost all of the birds he has to this day. He gave me an example of a hen that would find clutches of other eggs and just add her own, and a cockbird that drove a hen til she dropped and then would just walk away. "Here boys, have at it." LOL I have never in all my years with rollers had a single hen produce three eggs. But, hey, I have always bred individual pens, so I can guarantee my statement.

Milo,
Not all open loft breeders come across the issues that you brought forth. I breed open loft, and spend many hours a day with my birds, and can and will say that I have never seen a cock thread another hen that wasn't his. I also have never seen a hen lay 3 eggs. I am not saying that things haven't happened in my loft that I didnt catch, but the difference is that I spend considerable amounts of time with them, and that makes a difference as to knowing what is happening.

In my loft, there has never been, not once, an issue with a hen or cock sitting on the wrong nest, fighting over an established nest, or mating up to a different bird when they had a mate.

I have seen parents feed others young AFTER they have been placed on the ground.

Just my observation of what happens in my loft.

I read about a study co-authored by Joe Quinn I beleive,
that studied open loft parentage by using sex-linked (color) matings to determine parentage. If I recall the elegitmacy ran as high as 20%.

Well in my loft if the third egg did get sired by another I will know which as the only other cock in there is solid black and the hen with 3 eggs is a blue check so I should know the hen and her mate produced a blue bar with white flights and a blue check with white flights the cock being rec red. so what do you guys think? If sired by the other cock what should it look like

I`m thinking anouther hen dropped that 3rd egg. but I can be wrong. I dont think it has anything to do with anouther cock. I have seen cocks chase other hens while his was sitting the nest at home. I breed my main families in individual pens, but I do use an open loft system for the fosters so I dont really care if the cock does what most males of a species does.

hey Big Rudy !!!!
I been sorting hens so far. I`m trying to find 4 to 6 hens that seem to be the better of what I have. 2 or 3 Jacs, and 2 or 3 from my family. Based on how they performed, size, type, and how the produced last year.
I tend to get larger birds from my family, I think from the old Dick Stephens side of their line. BCR 99-101 was on the large side.
Then I want to try 1 cock from each family with these 3 hens. I`m hoping to get him to use them all and I`ll foster the eggs with my leftover breeders.
I want to get each family down to very close related birds. And try to bring down the size a bit. The Jacs already tend to be medium to smaller.

Strange things can happen...We have a little black check hen that always lays 1 very large egg - double yolk. 2 of the smallest babies I've ever seen. Both survive, grew up to be "regular" size and can really roll.
