Is there any advantadge or disadvantadge in flying a kit made up of all cock birds or all hen birds?
On the same note, is it advantageous or not to have a narrow age span or wide age span within a kit?

SD, I try to keep my kits as close in age as I possibly can but it's not always feasable to separate by sex-- for me it would be too many and too small kits and would bet difficult to sex 4 wk old birds to start ur kits. Just my set-up. db.

The only reason I seperate the sexes in the kitboxes is to protect the hens from being badgered by the cock birds. I don't like finding eggs in the kitbox.
PS - my birds are all Lutherens so it would be a single denomination(LOL)

I think the trick to not having kitbirds lay eggs is in the amount we feed them.If you keep em' hungry enough they aren't thinking about sex,,,just food.I asked John Weins about that when he was here last W/C prelims and he said he hardly ever gets eggs in the kitbox just keep them hungry but not too light. ---------- Kelly

when breeding comes around sometimes i separate my flyer's but i fly them together they seem happier that way. the trouble of separating them when they come down so i just darken the kitbox helps keep there mind off sex..control the feed more.. I heard if you fly them separate you might lose them ,flyaway.so i don't take a chance..they tend to roll more together like showing off.. when they are together I like to fly my birds the all the same age .they start at the same time . and they eat about the same amount of feed.. Snake, the only time I separate them is in the spring! Just to keep them thinking about flying and not breeding!

I have not had a single egg laid in the kitbox in 4 seasons. I contribute it to having darkened boxes.

You will only know the value of not separating your kits by sex is when you are devistated with an overfly and find yourself missing one sex from your flock. Most of us say that this shit don't happen to me...but sadly to say that shit happens.

Jay,
Never thought of it that way.....I don't think I will fly a single sex kit again. I lost 16 of 20 birds from my best kit about a year ago; wonder if they were all one sex? The long term affect of that would have been bad....real bad.
