Bob Evans living in the bay area of California and Elmer Smith from central California bred and flew yellow Rollers. The ash colored yellow were bred for many years within the Elmer Smith family. Elmer bred his ash red to his ash yellow exclusively. The ash red were the best performers in his stud thefore it helped in breeding better yellows. Elmer bred one of the most frequent stud of Rollers ever bred in the USA and his yellows were a delight to see perform. I met Elmer Smith while attending grammar school in the early nineteen fourtees. In nineteen seventy seven Elmer bought a stud of red recessive and yellow recessive Rolleers. All of his original Rollers were small and medium in size whereas the new stud were larger. Elmer mated the two families after a few years and ash yellow were bred to recessive yellow. The depth was medium and they were ex-wing in style with decent velosity. Bob Evans was another breeder that was famous for having a great stud of yellow rollers. The size of his yellow rollers looked larger compared to Elmer Smiths family. Recently an old time fancier said he saw Bob Evans fly his yellow rollers and was impressed. I have a small stud of yellow that were flown in California that caught the attention of some fanciers. They are still being bred and flown in Missouri. Sonny Ray

I have never seen a yellow with the full package.
I have seen yellows roll very good but lack frequency.
Ive seen yellows frequent that lack quality I have yet to see the perfect yellow kit of pigeons or individual roller and i don't think i ever will.

Wayne,a good friend of mine ,Steve Hanman of gloucester flew kits of yellows (badges)and they were first class,he crossed over to racers and has won quite a lot of races,he is now putting together another kit of badges to get back into the roller scene,he has been a pigeon fancier for well over forty years and well known around here and the midlands, but his yellows were fabulous spinners, they all originated from brum and he continually bred from the best,i dont know if he can trace any of his old strain its been a few years since he changed over, but i will say his yellows ,kit wise would give a good account of themselves in any competition, jim.

I have raised some good individual yellows but to have a whole kit of them I don't think it will ever happen for me.I have some yellow mottles that are doing good that are from a Red Check Cock and a Yellow Mottle Hen.It would take a lot of work to get a kit of them.David

Your friend may have flown a good kit of yellow badges i emphasise the name (BADGES)
Jim (BADGES) are a totally a diffrent bird than a Birmingham Roller the genetics are so much apart so i cant comment on your friends yellow badges.
But to get a kit of quality yellows i still think this task is near impossible here in the UK.

Rudy, I'll ask Richard Reyes to post some pic's of his yellows that he air tested that "spun". I bred and seen yellows at other hobbist yellows that had spin. I dont necessarlly bred for this color but if I do ,the focous will be for them to spin. Ihave I seen YELLOWS (mottles)that rolled-or spinned-----YES.

Anybody ever heard of Keith London in Los Angeles? He has a family of Yellows called the "Smoke Line". "Smoke" as Keith calls it, was a Yellow bird. Keith has produced the best yellows I have seen. I'm talking velocity, quality, frequency, and lots of depth. Furthermore, It outcrosses very nice to other families.

From my liminted knowledge, all the good performing yellows originated from the Bob Evan linage of birds. The only ones I know that will perform to any standard in my area and are the best in the air in yellows is flown by a good friend of mine bred down from the stuff Bob Evan sent to MN.

Yes, yellows can roll.

Donb, what difference does it make!! Yellow is yellow in color. How about yellow w/f/t or with w/t. Or is that considered Ash!!

I have seen a few that can perform nicely but not too many people have them around me.

If they are talking about all yellows then in reality they are talking about the gene for dilute. that being the case how about other dilutes ?? A good Ash-red or a Good recessive red is not made less of a performer just because it happens to carry the gene for dilute-- if the dilute gene also came from a good performer

Hello Gator45juice,

All of my birds come from Keith, boy he has some of the best birds I have ever seen. My brother David has a couple of yellows from him. I have a son off of his Smoke hen and man can they produce...

Smoke was actually a blue check w/f IPB 90 RD 747, Smoke's mom was a yellow.

I've seen his yellows perform as good as any other roller, he gets them (yellows) once in a while but none of his current breeders are yellows...

I think Don's point is that since yellows are dilute reds, the postulate that dilutes cannot perform, must also apply to the dilute of blue or black...dun or khaki. I have seen many dilutes perform with depth, quality, speed and work rate equal to any other....just not as many. At the NBRC Convention, a dilut blue bar, a dun bar, was selected as the best performing bird in the Futurity Kit by a panel of three judges, Randy Gibson, Scott Campbell, and Brent Martindale. I think we have to avoid such sweeping generalizations in this sport. Anytime you hear one made, I promise you, someone with a different experience in the sport can prove it wrong!
YITS,
Cliff

Spanky, tell Charlie I said what up! Does Charlie still have the old pensom's? Spanky do you know Santos and Hector Moreno are they still flying birds?

Richard, Que onda hermano! Question what do those yellows go back to? I think Jack Claig had some as well right? Do you have better rollers with the mottles or does it matter? Richard had mentioned the mottles that is the reason for my question!

Sal unfortunate the yellows that i breed, some mottles, some bagdes or selfs. The bop prefer them also some are a little hot but mostly there sound performers R.Luna stuff with some Red Devil stuff from Sal, Estrada that i started with in 2002, on back to R.Luna line.

Doug Thorley had some yellows that could spin with high velocity. I have to admit that these birds were fast. I would not doubt that old man Feral's birds were related to these as Richard Luna's yellows do spin also. In Doug Thorley's record book there are tons of yellows listed.

Got spin - Charlie has maintained the Pensom line from Eldon McDowell and Bob Scott for close to 40 years and still has an excellent family.

Spanky - Have a wonderful thanksgiving!

Charlie Sierra, that used to work at the Pomona Feed Store that is the Charlie I am talking about! Laron he was just flying the birds I do not think he bred out of them, He picked up a kit from Hector, that is the reason why I said he was just playing with them, Laron, I have not been out there for a while and when I do go back out there I just go visit Steve Smith! Just trying to keep up, LOL!

Jstar, I think Charlie also made a family of just white birds out of his Ellis birds! Spanky probably can correct me on that if I am wrong! They looked pretty! Jstar on the yellow comment, LMAO!!

JSTAR, it is funny to hear that about yellows and whites. I cant say it's said of ignorance, but of being(let me say it in a nice way)DUNCE. When Arnold Jackson flew the California Classic the third place and the forth place(by the way was to be the winner),yes a yellow ,the forth was out of a white and yellow. When Doug and Randy flew the California Classic ,the forth place was out of dilute and the sixth place ,on both sides of her parents, guess what, yes they were yellow on one side each.
What a trip, huh.

The reason I am asking about the white selves is because I am starting a side family of mine of just white selves. In two years, I have not culled even one because of their excellent performance and have not lost one to BOP or overfly or just because of being young. The family starts rolling a bit later than my others, at about 7 months but they are at the 25 to 30’ range and H pattern. So far I have a half a kit and I call this side of the family “The Wedding Bells”.
