List, question do you look at how many birds you breed versus how many birds you roll, and how many birds actually show you spin?

My opinion is that we all know who is doing what in our kits. We weed out the weak birds, the ones that dont show the goods, and fly what we think are working. In weeding out the weaker, we can place them in a younger, less performing kit and see if their performance factor rises to the point of being returned back in the older kit.
I keep records on:
What age they start flying. What age they start flipping. What age they actually start putting a decent roll together What age they are culled due to lack of performance.etc. What age they are if and when they roll down/bump often.
These are things that most will keep track of.

RUUDDDYYYY, That depends on the bird. I dont cull by age, but by how the bird is acting. For me, a non kitting bird is the first to go, before any other type of problem bird. I cant stand a non kitter!

Sorry Gotspin..Guess I miss understood.
Rudyyy, I have not culled any birds this year as of yet. I had a few flyaways 2 weeks back when I let some young out. My neighbors cat snatched 2 the other night. I had one bump yesterday that didnt make it, so all in all, they are culling themselves..LOL

For what its worth, I keep records on percentages. Like Luna said, thats what perpetuates your quality stock for generations into the future. I am more interested in those pairs that produce me a majority of adequate rollers round after round, than those which produce the occasional excellent bird and a bunch of mediocre junk.
I expect my pairs to produce a young bird capable of replacing the parent every year. It doesnt always happen, but thats my expectation. Those pairs which dont produce at least 50% satisfactory rollers get broken up and remated. 2 years in a row less than 50% and they're out, either back to the kitbox or culled.
I am changing my goal somewhat as a breeder from trying to produce the oustanding bird, "champion" if you will to breeding birds that consistently produce good solid spinners on a regular basis. Sure, I am always on the look out for excellence, however, consistency is of more value to me.

Gotspin, I grade my birds on how many I actually fly in or fly period to get my percentages. I then evaluate the pairs to see which ones are producing the high %. then I go to my records to see which of the birds from those pairs have the best % with other mates. The ones with the low percentages are moved on from.
