I looked through the archive and couldn't really find any tips for shipping birds. What are some of the things you do to ensure your birds make it to their destination in good condition?

Make sure the shipping box is well ventilated and don't put food or water in the box.I've received birds from the other side of the country no problems.Rubbermaid container is the cheapest way to go drill lotsa holes for air and tape it up real good.

Hey MrC, postal regulations now indicate you must use an approved shipping container that actually says "Horizon" on the box.

These boxes are specially designed (shaped) to allow airflow even when stacked together with other packages and boxes. Horizon makes the proper shipping boxes out of cardboard and a special filament/fiber material covering air holes from the inside.

The post office requires the birds in these boxes to be shipped by Overnight Express mail; even though often, they will arrive the SECOND day by 3PM. They no longer guarantee next day delivery on live shipments even though you are required to pay for it! ;-)

The rates are in this price range:

1 Pigeon: $27.50
2 Pigeon: $32.50
4 Pigeon: $36.50
6 Pigeon: $42.50
8 Pigeon: $46.50
10 Pigeon: $50.00

A Horizon box for 1 to 4 pigeons is: $9.95

A Horizon Box for 5 to 8(10 smaller pigeons?) is: $17.95

==

When RPDC ships pigeons, we always use a new fresh box, wood chips/shavings.

We hand bathe, feed and water the birds before they go into the box. They arrive in good condition and will need to be fed and watered upon arrival.

When weather temps reaches 35 degrees(I will check), they won't accept them for shipment or when its going to be in the high 80's they won't accept them either.

Call the post office ahead of time and make sure you can send them.

Mr Conductor,

Birds shipped via the post office are to only be shipped in a shipping box.Don't place any water in the box because you will make the box wet and the box may open or tear at some point. The best way is to feed the birds all they can eat for two days and give them plenty of water. Then you can box them up. A couple of days before shipping you need to call your local post office to find out where you need to take the birds and to make sure they have flight (transportation) where the birds are heading.I have shipped 22 birds from the West Coast to the East Coast for around $60.00 after the NBRC auction.
There is another way to ship if you are willing to pay a little more. You can ship via Delta airlines if you have Delta service in your area and the person your shipping to has service in there area. You call Delta cargo because you have reserve space on the flight and you can get the birds the same day. I've gotten birds from the East Coast in about 5 to 6 hours. It's about $100.00 for 20 birds. They will also ship COD which is nice because the person picking up the birds can pay the shipping when they pick up the birds, the shipper pays nothing.
