How do you guys leave your kit birds for a 2 or 3 day stretch! I haven't anyone to feed for me! I have them on a very consistant feeding program, obviously that will be screwed up this week! Is there a good way of doing this and how long will it take to get them back to where I can fly and not have an overfly!

Sal a simple solution is a cafeteria feeder with sufficient food for the time you are going to be absent.Obviously you would have to take the same measures for their water, making sure they have a big enough container or containers. It's always hard when you go away for long periods of time.
I've been lucky that i have a friend who takes care of them for me.I have been gone as long as 2 weeks. It would be impossible to go on vacation otherwise.

Good luck.

That was my plan, I was just wondering how long it would take to get them back to normal after they have been fed up! I was gonna feed them and then leave them with 2 days food!

You can feed them straight Milo for the two days so you will not fat them up. Instead you will break them up a little. Ones you get back fly them and see what they need.

Val,
If I am leaving for 3 days, I give them an amount to last 4 days. It is alot easier to give them enough, and work it off of them, than it is to come back to starved birds!

I leave several times a year for training, Holidays, etc. and have never had any issues feeding this way..Make sure the water supply matches the feed supply.

Val,

Make sure you have only one type of grain in the feeder. Otherwise, they will waist most of the feed and only be enough to last them one day. Just food for thought...

I have feed my birds pure milo for 7 days and only breaks them down to get them ready for training.

You can also do wheat instead of milo is better only one see. A lot easier to work them after you come back I have done this a couple of times and no problem.

Milo will not want to fly or fly low when you fly them but you give them regular feed and they will jump back up.

If you give them pure wheat they will dot high and it will take a couple of days to drop them down to were you want them.

Jay,
That is not a factual statement!
I have always left a mix of feed for them, and have never had any issues. When they eat lets say the wheat, they will continue eating the other grains..Their not gonna starve when they have other grains in front of them..Doesnt make since.

No Jerry. You must have misunderstood what I said. When you give them mixed grain they will pick up what they like first and with their peaks they will swift through the feed to get more of what they want to eat. The other grain will be flying all over the place. However, that will not happen in a cafeteria style feeding container because each grain is separated in a separate compartment and the opening is just big enough for them to pickup the grain. Those cafeteria feeders are not cheap when you purchase them and not small enough to keep in a kit box.

Sorry, I misunderstood.
So you are saying feed seperate grains, in different bins, but have it supplied at the sane time?

For just leaving for a few days, I will feed only one grain in one container. No need for many grains. I breed in individual breeding compartments and I used to feed my breeders good pigeon mixed feed but at the end of the summer, I found myself wasting 50lb bag of feed just because the birds search for their favorite grain and the rest goes on the floor. Even thou I had their containers designed to eliminate waste and still wasted allot.

One time, I put inside the kitbox a wild bird feeder because I was planning to leave for couple of days. I checked on them a few hours later and half of the container was empty and the rest of the feed was on the bottom of the crap catching tray.
