Mr. Conductor, I live out here in the high desert also ,it does get cold out here. Today I put plastic canvas on the open of my lofts, to help my birds keep warmer with along their squeakers.

It gets awfully cold here in the winter. It reaches to -10 degrees in the heart of winter. With the wind chill it gets bellow 20 or more. The temp inside the loft is similar to the outside. The birds stay worm. I feed them a bit of corn when the temp gets bellow zero. At times, you get up in the morning and find about two feet of snow on the roofs. The snow and the cold weather don’t bother the birds.

These birds really amaze me being able to withstand such cold weather. Right now its 37 degrees in my loft, this morning it was 25 degrees. I too cover all the openings with tarps to keep the drafts out. ----------

I don`t do anything really special except when it`s gonna get way cold. As long as you keep the drafts down, dry inside and the birds fed up they will be fine. Gets down to -5 at least once a winter here. Then we usually have a 4-5 day stretch below freezing at least once a winter also. Thats the hardest one to keep the birds from getting stressed. Another good reason to use the fall time to get your birds as healthy as possible.
The jugs were frozen in my loft this AM at 20 degrees. The kitboxes with wire floors still had water in the jugs. The birds body temp was keeping the smaller boxes warmer than the loft. I do have lights for the loft when it stays cold for more than a few days. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!

I went to work this morning which is about 30 min drive from home and there were about 12 separate accidents in separate sections of the highway due to the ice on the highway. Someone lost control and smacked the police car in the rear that was at one of the accidents. Was very terrible driving to work and for once I did the 55mph.
