Tou,
I think this is what you`re looking for bro.

You`ll have to build a door for the box. I built one with scrap off the jobsite. Found some hardibacker soffet material with vent holes already in it.

This is the last one I built

I like the dowel door a lot better. This one was probably 40 bux higher. The dowels aren`t cheap.

You don`t neccessarly have to use dowels either. I have seen a lot of guys use the one inch slats on the front of their breeder boxes. Same principle would work as well if not better at less expense.

Kel,
Nah,I have em on hydraulic lifts. Tony has em in his store.
I keep em below the fence line to stay low profile. If someone looks over the fence, the boxes are closed and the only one with birds visible is the breeder loft.It contains the correct amount of birds according to the city ordinance (20). The visible breeder loft roof looks like a storage building driving down the alley.
Hey thats a nice hat you have on in your pic.

I am still using it and I like it very much, once I got it fine tuned.
I have made an adjustment. I put one perch on an angle and and glued some blocks to it for them to grab. It works a lot better now. Probably gonna change the rest. I "tested" it for almost two months now. It keeps the birds seperated, perch filled and gives them that higher than you feeling if it is only two inches. I spaced the blocks where they are just out of reach of each other. If they get off the block, they slide off and relinquish the spot. Because it is narrow and angled,it is easy to defend. It has kept the scrabbling to a minimum.
Now to put the larger grate in the bottom of the box and get em up off the floor. Had a cat prowling around lately.

your best bet go to home depot and take a look at the prices yourself. that way you can see first hand the types, sizes and prices of lumber. Do some researching there and see what material you would like to use to make a loft. Calling wouldnt help if you dont already know what you need. If you dont have the cash as you've stated on another previous post, how do you expect to buy all the lumber to build a loft? If I were you, as many younger roller enthusiast have done it, is fine scrap wood and build a loft that way. thats the best way to learn how to build one and very cost efficent too. Good Luck. BTW your the same guy that was on the NBRC forum asking questions right? anyways welcome

tou vang, Eat the birds you have, build a warm dry, secure box for one pair of birds then post a picture of the box. I will send you one pair of young birds that I have raised from Tony's stock ( Tony I mean no disrespect and do not think I am taking away from your potential sells base, but if you think I might be, then delete this post) One pair is all you need to start out right! Tony's birds are as good as any you will find anywhere! Along with that I will provide you with my email address and help you anyway I can short of sending any money. Do it yourself like all the rest of the young fanciers who work odd jobs or save anyway they can, earn your way, it truly will mean more when you are an oldfart.

Tou, try looking around construction sites, new homes, buildings, ect.! Ask them if you can pick up some scrap lumber! Helps them clean up the jobsite and you get to score some lumber! Might even work out to a part time job for cash to buy some other supplies!

Just an idea, good luck!

I would ask! If it is scrap, they shouldn't mind you having it! Might offend them if you just take it and they see you!

Tou, i'm sure that its illegal to just take lumber like that...thats stealing bro... if you don't have the money then just go to a lumber yard and get the scrap boards that they don't need but you would still need to ask them first.....I use to go to the lumber yard also when i didn't want to spend any money....sometimes your find some good wood there which you can use for the kit box its better than stealing......

dont worry too much about the cleanliness of the scrap wood. You can clean them up, paint them whatever. If you're looking for scrap wood and are to worried about what you want in particular, you wont find jack squat that suitable for you. with the money you pay, which is zilch, you should be happy. you'd be surprised at what you can make happen with scrap wood. good luck

I dont know if Home Depot is still doing this but sometimes I go there they have lots of scratch wood... they are the woods that other customers cut out of... some may be big and some are small but still useful... they are mark in color... I believe green one are the cheapest...only 50 cent... other scratch go up to 1.50... not much for a starter... get what you can now and when you are older, have a real job, have a truck w/bed, and then you start searching for quality loft...

Hey Thom, good job offering the kid some Ruby's, I was just reading this thread and thinking "someone needs to help this kid", and what do ya know? You are helping him out. Good Job Thom!

I'll donate 10 perches to help the kid out when he has his loft/kit box finished. I'll send him an email about it.

Hey this is fun! ;-)

W@YNE UK, When I was a young lad I was fortunate to have a local breeder who not only helped me but was never to busy or to tired to set down and talk birds. Looking back now I know their were days when he must have thought, oh no not him again! He sold me birds for little or no money but made sure I had an investment into them, sometimes work (cleaning the loft) or other chores. A great man that I will never forget unfortunatly he passed on.

Tou, I dont have a home depot close to me so I use Lowes. BUT, I`m sure most are all the same. When you go to the store ask for the manager. Tell him what you are building. All the stores around me have what they call "cull lumber" They cant sell it because of defects, but will usually cut the price greatly if not just give it away to get rid of it. They write it off as scrap. Ive done this many times to build gates and doors in and around my barn. Some has been used for nest boxs and perch boards. An 8 foot piece that is warped real bad can be cut into small parts and the bow doesnt even show or affect anything. GOOD LUCK with the birds Tou.

Tou,
If you are gonna buy some tools,go to the pawn shop. Til you get older and get a real job, just get something that work for you til then.
You need a good measuring tape, not one of those 1/2 inch blade,12 foot salesman tapes. A 1 inch blade 20 footer will work.
A circular saw, plug it in and goose once or twice and listen for loose stuff inside.
A drill;same electric check,a square and a level. A utility knife and some wood glue are helpful too.
12d sinker nails for the lumber and some 1 1/4 inch deck screws for the siding to cover the frame. A small box of 1/2 inch fencing staples will hold the wire quite nicely.

There are a bunch of construction guys on here. Just ask we can tell you most anything.

One place we haven`t discussed is Harbor Freight. They have a lot of tools cheap. Great for home use most of the time.
