Hi,

I have 15 young of the year and have let them fly a couple of times. What should I expect? Do they roll right away or does it take a while for them to develop? Righr know they just circle and occasionally stop and just kind of drop with wings extended. Does this bode well for them or are they to be culled?

Your birds are currently Tail Riding. Within a month they will be doing a few flips. It depends on the family you fly, within few months after that you start to see spinning. With my family the older they get the better they get.

If they are young and only flew a few time you should not see any rolls... you'll have to fly them for awhile... flying a week or two you should see them trying to roll... but this also depend on what bloodline you have... most people have there bird rolls very good at 3-4 month old... I have some Horner birds that rolls at 6-7 month old... you should go to where u got your birds from and ask question...

Silentroll, I also have Horner birds and they spin well and age 6 to 7 months. But I have two pairs that their offsprings start to spin well at 3 months. Go figure.

welcome Tom,, like Richard says get a book and learn all you can..before you even think about culling a young bird, young birds are only young once. they will fly around in a clownish way tail riding ect, but soon those tail rides become tumble and tumble becomes rolls.. hold on on culling until you learn a little more on these lil feather friends,a bird you cull early, that same bird in somebody hands could have been a great bird..

man I remember when I first had birds... I was stupid enough to cull one of Johnny smith bird when he roll 20ft and hit my AC and a week later he rolls like sh**. started floating, gliding, and tumble and then floats all the way down... he probably and is one of my best bird I encounter...

Thanks for the replies. I feel better now. I'll keep working at it. Can you recommend a book(s) by title.

Pensom book is the first one you really need to purchase. Then after that would be Kawalisky(sp) book "True Spinning Rollers".
