is there a way of stopping(not killing) hawks/falcons from getting your birds? like, a way to scare them off without killing or hurting them.

I dont think there is a way to stop them, if that were the case we'd all be flying BOP free. Your best bet is avoiding them. Locking down your birds even though excruciating to many rollermen will keep your birds living an extra day, changing up your flying schedule (days and times) will help to name a few. Im sure there are many more techniques experienced rollermen on this board can answer.

It funny but I'm trying to learn from nature, I lost 2 young ones to BOP last week , and i notice that both times i didn't see the sparrows on my electric pole or the black crows eating worms after i mow the grass-or what ever they be eating..so i waited for that sparrow-to stand on that pole again so i could let my birds out ..sure enough i let my birds out and no falcon,,three days straight of flying and no BOP.it felt good again -,so maybe nature is talking to me .so I'm listening ..observing..no lil brown sparrow no flying for me..------ Ralph....

Listen to the Blue Jays, they give a good warning. Look at the behavior of the wild birds in your neighborhood. If you see the sparrows fly in groups and fast in one direction that tells you the direction where the hawk is perching. The birds are usually flying away from him. When you see the sparrows are flying fast and trying to hide in pushes in a hurry in your backyard that would tell you the hawk is close somewhere and keep your eyes to the sky to spot him. He will most likely fly from a tree to a tree to set an ambush. If you see that your neighborhood wild birds are quite and nowhere around, you better watch out, he is in a prowl.
This time of year the hawks will challenge pigeons even common pigeons and leave the other wild birds alone due to the fat content in a pigeon and the amount of food to keep him worm in the winter days. He will chase sparrows and other black birds when the day gets close to end and was not successful catching a pigeon.

is it legal to burn things like picollo peat this time of the year?
yea. all my birds that were taken away was all red. maybe because they can be spotted good.
one of my best stock cocks were taken by a hawk today. came back from school and noticed that one of my cock rollers that i was planning to stock was missing. well, i went to the other side of the yard and saw a grip of feathers that was the color of my missing bird. i am kind of mad because i cant do anything about it.
ok. i will try all of your advices in a few more days.

I believe the predators go for a particular color because they have had the most luck with that color in the past. If the BOP's first 2 or 3 victims happen to be reds, then they may well target reds again in the future. Al

My best advice is to lock down Tou, if you don't want to lose any birds...i know that fire crackers scares the hell out of them but its illegal....

Maybe illegal in the State of CA. Other states will make an issue if you continiously fire them on odd times and your neighbors complain. Other than that just be carefull not to cause any fires with them and disrupt the harmony with your neighbors.

Hawks ---------- golddigger39Mn Feed Crows. All the crows here in Minnesota chase hawks away. This is the thing to do shoot rabbits and small varmits,seed your yard to feed crows. I have not seen a hawk yet this fall. But the guy next door tells me one was in the tree near the loft 2 days ago, so i locked down now. One more thing is cut down all the big trees you have in your yard {i have one small tree} the big problem is to many big trees for the hawks to sit in. Golddigger39Mn {Rollers}
