im not going to say that you cant find a good bird at a feed store.but i wouldnt people take their cull ,sick, old, never flown, homed in none kitters, none trap, bad habbit.i dont think anyone takes a bird out of your a or b kit and goes to the pet store to sell it for 5.00.just to many things to have to go through.call tony he'll hook you up .ask for lay-a-way LOL

Hey kid... Wow.. You're really trying to start some mess.. (smile) I guess it is possible.. There occasionally have been good birds in some of the pet shops here in L.A. But unless you really know how to evaluate pigeons, I wouldn't advise trying it. I'd get birds from a reliable breeder. Your post reminds me.. Actually, I bought another part of my family from a pet shop. They were a pair of spangles and it was back in the 60s.. The pet shop owner told me that the guy who bred hem had "paid a lot of money" fot the parents. They were hard spinners too.. and I bred my foundation hen's grandfather out of the hen I bought. He showed a clean hole and went about 25 feet. Paul G

I think you will spend many a five dollar bills before you get a bird worth putting in your kit box.buying from feed stores. at least were i come from. I know many a roller man that bring all there culls to exchange for feed.

At a lot of club flies this year a lot of the members have talked about that. The main feed store around is the Pomona feed store and it is known to sometimes get very good birds. A lot of very good birds in the area and a few show up there on a regular basis. They also talked about a guy they know that has all pet store birds and he did very well. So it seems you can get some good birds if the area is a hot bed for rollers.
You must remember that 95% at the feed store are probably junk. It is still far better to got from a breeder you know.

Look up the article in the NBRC. It was a issue or two after He won. That will give you everything you need to know. You can always give him a call as well. He's a real good guy. ---------- Ray

Deadenkid - Do not even waste your time with pet shop pigeons. Do not even let it cross your mind and never use a stray! Get a good family and work with them. If you want two families do that but keep them separate until you truly understand the families and then you can experiment with crossing them if it is necessary.

Kid,
Rod and I are good friends so I can tell you that the world cup wasn't made up of pet shop birds like Ray stated. Rod did get one hen from the pet shop which turned out to be his main hen Dark check Utah 90 1685. This hen was traced back to Hugo Blass. Jay,
Rod and I both picked up the Reed blood at the same time about 31/2 years ago. We both picked up a few birds directly from Norm. Rod purchased 3 cocks and I purchased 1 cock and 2 hens. The rest of both Rod's and my birds came from Steve Agent. We both purcahed a few pairs from Steve after watching some of the young perfrom we really liked what we saw.So we went to visit Steve and picked some birds out of the air.

Victor,
Your right a person want take a bird out of his own A team or breeder to the feed store. On the other hand some don't have a problem taking someones elses A teamer or breeder to the feed store. Those are the ones that they don't keep from someones over fly, hawk or falcon attacks. There are stray keepers and then there are some that will tell you that they don't keep strays and they are right because they take them and trade them for feed. "I'm not saying that all people that say they don't keep strays trade them for feed but it does happen."I'm not saying that one should buy his brids from a feed store either. It's just things like this do happen. I go to my local feed some times after a over fly just to see if see any of my birds there. Yes I have found some and I have had calls from guys wanting pedigrees on birds I lost. They say they purchased the bird from the local feed store. I found one bird with my band number I lost on it and bought it back from the feed store. Once I got home and check my records on the computer found that the band number was one of mine but the color of the bird didn't match. some one had placed my bands on another bird.

John...
That is exactly true... While I was at the feed store in Hemet, CA, I found an Eddie Verdugo Band one a black hen... there were two bands... One has number on it and the other has the name and phone #. So I purchase that bird, contacted him and and gave him the number... he said it was not on his list... Nicely he invited me over and to bring in the hen and he'll trade it for some of his birds and told me to call him in 3 month and I ask him if I can fly it... Then it flew away after 1 month homing it... thats when I lost the phone number and then recieved it from here then I gave him a call... he told me to come by anytime, just give him a call first... haven't gone there yet...
