I started feeding pellets again (Nature Wise Gamebird) to all my birds. I was feeding 1 cup per 10 birds of the pigeon mix. It seems like I am feed more of the pellets then I was feeding the mix. Is this natural for them to want more of the pellets, they act like they are starved. Today, when I went in the loft to feed then, they seemed to be more excited to see me.......LOL. Is their a conversion to feed pellets to multi grain mix? Or is this something that I have to play with? What's your take on this?

Paul, I feed pellets to my breeders all they want 24/7. My holdover kit and young birds are fed 1/3 pellets,1/3 milo, 1/3 wheat. They seem to digest the pellets faster then any other thing. If you are feeding only pellets then what I would do is feed unrestricted until all birds leave the feed tray. Then pull the feed out. I feed in this manner twice a day through the winter to non flying birds, only once to flying kit birds. This works for me with my birds, I hope this helps.

Paul, it is the cold weather that we been having here in Ohio and the temps dipping to the 20's at night that causing them to starv. They generate heat to keep worm digesting their feed and in turn they need more of it. I will not feed them pellets alone this time of year. Think about half/half and once the temps stays in the 20's all day long then substitute some good ol' Ohio corn. Corn will generate lots of heat for them to stay cozy worm at night.

The pellets digest a lot faster and they will be hungry sooner! I feed about 1/5 pellets in my mix! ---------- Val

Okay guys I'll take all into consideration. Thanks...My new loft is alittle warmer on the inside now. As of yet my water fountains have'nt froze. I do feed corn when it is in the 20's. I thought the whole concept of feeding pellets was to cut back on their feed intake? Guess I was wrong........My breeders are on an all they can eat system too, not concerned about them at all. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

I add the pellets and popcorn when it gets colder. Use them as a substitute in the summer and a supplement in the winter. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!

Rudy...thats the first thing I noticed after I started to feed them the pellets. Way to much crap. But at least they are not wasting any of their feed now. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul
