flyers, which performs best in your family, hens or cocks or are they equal? the reason i ask, is because people see a good bird spinning they think it is a hen.

I think it depends on the family of birds. I tend to get more good hens than cocks. In the hotter families, I think there are more good cocks.
Cocks tend to be stronger and perhaps more resistant to the roll than the hens and I think that's why the hotter families may poroduce a higher percentage of really outstanding in the air cocks.

I find I get just as many good hens as cocks but the hens have more control then the cocks. My deeper hens seem to be able to shorten the roll up flying down low and the deep cocks learn not to roll at a low level after they bounce a couple times. If they roll on the deep side, 30 to 40 feet and both just as frequent I know while feeding wheat the cocks will have an accident coming out of the kit box before the hens. My Ruby birds from Tony that I have been flying 2 years and 20 footers never have an accident and they are frequent rollers.

I get more good hens. I think need a bit more heat in the line and I am breeding towards that.

I think it depends on what the breeder is wanting to breed for.If I want depth and speed my Cocks have it.If I want frequency and shorter rolls my Hens win hands down.So in answer to your question I raise more hens than cocks.David

I have the mason strain and my hens are deeper then the cocks. How ever if i get a deep cock they Seem to hold up a lot better then the hens. plus checking my breeding records. I have breed more hens then cocks every year over the pass 10 years like 20% more ,, Gave a kid down the road 8 young this spring he ended up with 7 hens and one cock lol

I do tend to get deeper cocks the first year but the hens seem to hold up the second year. I was looking at the birds this year that I was concidering for stock and there were twice as many hens as cocks. Looks like next year I will be flying some really good hens again, just because I dont have enough good cocks to stock them all with. In my family line I had 6 good cocks in the stock loft. If I stocked all the hens that I thought should be stocked , there would of been 11 hens to 6 cocks. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts
