I remembered this from a long time ago, and was wondering if I should post it. Lets see if I can explain this.. A guy showed me how to tell if a bird is male of female.
What you do is hold the bird in you hands
You hold the feet & legs (ankles) between your thumb and first finger
At the same time you hold the bird by its beak with the other hand also using your thumb and first finger.
Slightly extend the neck of the bird, and with both of your hands moving up and down at the same time.. The bird will flap its wings. What you are looking for is.. What the tail is doing...
Tail up = female Tail down = male
Try it let me know..

Rudy, I just use a paper clip and about 4in. of sewing thread. Tie the paper clip to the thread and hold as steady as you can and as close as you can about 1/4 inch above the lower back at the base of the tail. Remember you need about 4inches between your finger and the paper clip. Watch the paper clip if it swings back and forth it's a cock, if it swings in a circle it's a hen. Try it on your wrist and your wife's it really works no joke. Try it on a bird you know is a cock and one you know is a hen..

A cock bird when relaxed will usually stand more erect than a hen, with the tail almost touching the floor. A hen when relaxed will usually have the tail out more horizontal and further off the floor.--Geo.

Sexing Birds:
1) Get an expensive blood test via Veterinarian, or
2) Wait 6 to 8 months, see if lays an egg.
Both of these methods give 100% positive results.
Anything other than these two methods you are guessing and have a 50% chance of being right.

another way thats is really easyand i almost am right all the time is put your finger inbetween the birds legs feel the bone inbetween its legs if your finger fits it a hen if not its a cock cause the hen has to lay eggs and then it will usally be bigger to fit the eggs

After a hen has matured,I can usually tell by the "finger thingy"LOL, but thats because she has layed a few eggs and her bones have spread a bit, but on the young birds, there is little difference to me! ---------- Val

I read Double R it seems like he saying hold it over the birds back. I don't see how that will work if you don't tie it to the bird or something. Thats what I'm trying to understand.

Drama,,tie the paper clip to a piece of string. Then holding the bird in 1 hand, take the paper clip on the string in your other hand put it directly above the bird's back.If the paper clip goes back and forth then it's a cock if the paper clip goes in circles it's a hen.It work all of the time for me.Tell Sonny (your neighbor)I said whats up. ----------

Drama Side, The paper clip does not touch the bird hold it as close as you can to the birds lower back without touching the bird. Try holding the paper clip above the inside of your wrist and you will see what I am talking about.

I would guess it has something to do with the magnetic fields that people and animals have a4round them! Males and females will produce different results!Just guessing!
I am gonna give this a try! Sounds logical! ---------- Val

I tied a thread and a paper clip to my disk at work today. Waited until it is at stand still and stuck my rest under it. It did not move and tried several times and not a thing. I asked my co-worker Cindy who sits in my area and asked her to try it. Same thing not a thing...It failed my test.

the sex indicator works always this one you swing it straight back and forth count to 30 and watch it do its thing,if its a girl it would go in circle or male it would keep going back and forth..it picks up on the energy that our body has to indicate the sex..i try it on my dog it works too.. on my neighbor and i told him if it goes in circle you better tell your wife..lol.funny thing like oldguy said if you think male sometime it will go with your thoughts i just turn away without any thoughts then glance at it to see what way is turning..I say its about 90% accurate.. ---------- Ralph....

Years ago Dave Gehrke and I worked together and marked our eggs for the whole season with 1st or 2nd egg layed. The results for each pair of eggs came out as expected, nearly 50% one hen and one cock, about 25% two hens, and about 25 % two cocks. In the clutches with a cock and a hen there was no indication that their first layed egg was one or the other. Chance can do weird things when small numbers of trials are used but reaches close to true percentages when a large number of trials are used.

Agree with Bigbull regarding eggs, when two eggs laid if one contains a cock and other a hen,95% time the first egg laid is a cock, this is known to most racing widoower fanciers who use this trait to a large extent.

Here is one that has not been mentioned. It was in the NBRC once. You have to check the birds when very young say only one to ten days. Before they get pin feathers. Hold the bird facing its but towards you, BE CAREFUL with this part. If the but has a smile it is a male and if it has a frwon it is female. A local guy here tested this and It was aprx. 80 % accurate. Big bull, many times we get two hens or two cocks in a nest. Some pairs will even thow mostly one sex I noticed once. Also it used to be with chickens that a more oval egg was a rooster but the rounder eggs were hens, but that was probably not 100% accurate. They can tell with chickens, I wonder how they do that??? anyone know? I like what the guy said above you have a 50 / 50 chance either way. unless its a color gene like BLue check cock carring blue bar and a blue bar hen ect. Then you would know but we don't want to stir up a hornets nest about color do we. Bill C

I use a piece of copper tied onto a string as described above. When i heard it i called B.S. I tried it at home and found it to work more than 90%. It has however never been wrong. There are some birds that just dont give an indication one way or other, but it has never told me hen when it was cock or vice versa. I dont know why it works and I am a science fan. It must not be magnetic though because it works for me with copper. ???

Bill, this subject came up a couple of times in the last couple of years. I believe Kelly (Santandercal) was the first to mention the "smile or frown" method over a year ago, best that I can recall! I have been using this method since, and it has proven around 70%-80% true for me! Haven't tried the string and paper clip thing yet, but so far this method works best for me! It seems pretty accurate, but on some squeaks, its hard to tell. Seems to be just a straight line! LOL ---------- Val

The Old Mamaw's down the Bayou used to take a man's wedding ring, put it on a string and hold it over his pregnant wife's belly, back and forth in a straight line means a boy, round and round in a circle a girl, surprizingly it has a high percentage rate of being correct, watch out for the hoodoo, your heart has to be right! Today,I just started to pr up afew birds and I used the paper clip with the 5" string and it worked. All the ones that I knew that were cock birds, the clip went back and forth. With the hens, the clip made the circle. Works for ME!!!!! ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

c robbo...........its true some hens act like cock birds. A young hen sometime acts and sounds like a cock bird. But, LISTEN and LOOK very carefully at them both. It take a keen EAR and EYE plus lots of practice.. Their is a difference in how they act. It just take some time to figure it out and understand which is which. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul
