Hello:
If they are building any houses near you, ask the carperters if you can have the scrap plywood & 2" x 4"'s. Even ask the manager @ Home Depot if you could have some of the stuff they throw away....With an all wire set up the birds will be in a draft and will get sick.....Glenn

You guys are talking a young kid who has no money, job or a car to travel as he wishes to any store and still live with his parents.
Kid, some folks will throw away furniture and put if on the curb for the garbage truck. Some of those furniture like book shelves and such have allot of wood that you can take a part and built a kitbox. It is just a squre box.

tou, Like the guys were saying... make it the way you want Check out others boxes to get ideas and go from their.
When I was a kid my friends I walked around looking for stuff to use. Plywood, old boards, stuff people put out for trash.. Once we found a large crate 48" x 48" we took lugged it home and wrapped it with chicken wire and put a roof on it and called it a squab cage..
First start off simple and work your way up.. Maybe you can sell or trade some of your young birds for feed or $ Good luck
here are two photos of my kit box..

Hey Tou, why not thank Ray for taking time to answer your thread and posting pictures as well instead of responding to his post like that. Pretty cut and dry as far as your title goes. He also answered your question, take a look at his kit box he posted. That is what it should look like (with a couple minor tweaks that you see fit). It is very well built. Its a good size, is dark (preference), is well ventilated (wire bottom, and wire window front w/removable cover , box perches, bottom tray, elevated off the ground (legs), solid roofing material, large front door and trapping system. Also not to mention its a triple kit box.. What about RXR's loft, thats a read nice kit bot as well. its better to see than to read and make what you think of it. Thats just my 2 cents. ---------- Gary

I dont think they mind but I'll have to upgrade my kit and lft soon becuz feathers are getting everywhere but cuz of wind and open spaces... I dont even know if they allow me to keep em... All I know is that they sent a paper for no loud generator, open trash, green grass or healthy looking plants or none at all and of course no live stock... but they aren't live stock... they are my pets... my neighbors keeps dogs and do you think I like looking at big pile of sh**... and them barking all night...?

Tau, Like you I did not have a car or a job at your age, yet I managed to build a loft and fly rollers as a kid. IM not trying to cry or fill sorry for myself but when I was your age I was raised by my mother who is disabled and had to raise three boys on her own yet I still found a way to build a loft. Sometimes its not your situation, but how bad you want to do something. This is the photo of my loft as a kid. You can do it kid, just start with a plan and stick with it. Best of luck to ya Kid!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tou, if your parents do not like the birds, probably best to give them up for a hobby they can support you in.
This way you all can spend happy time together or at least receive their approval and support for something else you want to do.
Also, if you are short of funds it will be difficult to buy pigeon food and other supplies that they will sooner or later need to maintain and keep good health.
So in this rare instance, it might be best to give up the birds for something your parents will support. Good luck! ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tou, many of us had pigeons growing up.Maybe it was easier for some given their location. I lived close to a grainery and all our feed was, well, kinda free. All us kids who had pigeons cleaned up spilled grain and leftovers. We also got caugh , liberating an old billboard sign by the road one time. Man, theres a lot of lumber in a billboard. We were pulling it with my dads tractor when the farmer who owned it seen us. But he let us keep it.Keep in mind, I`m NOT advocating stealing anything, those were different times back then. And I think the farmers knew we were just looking for a way to raise some birds. A healthy and aducational outlet for a bunch of kids.
The point is, just look around. If you`re serious you can find a way to keep a few birds. A paper route can go a long way towards feed. And if all else fails, just wait a few years till you are on your own and then you will have a job, a car and you can get back into the pigeons. It is a life time addiction for most of us once you get bit by the bug. Some of us just took a break while we were learning to be all grown up... ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

let me tell you something... do you want to start good and not worried about anything... throw watever that are trash into your mom's hot pot to make soup and then support your good one...as in a couple best one... if you think they aren't wat you want throw them all in there... get a part-time job, save up, build your loft, and nicely contact who's bird you want and price may varies... it should take around 6 month or more to settle things they should be...

Sundance I see why they call you the Sundance kid now..lol..
TOU,,How would you feed the birds if you have no money .have you given that some thought... when i was a kid i wanted birds so bad i was about ten my friends had about 300 birds up the roof back in the Bronx ,he said if you want to join you have to bring in a pigeon ,I had no money, my Dad didn't want me with birds, so i snuck to the pet shop pull my zipper down stuck a bird in my pants and off to my friend now can i join,,not implying stealing is good ,don't get me wrong, he fed them for me so that was easy but everyday i get a belt whipping from my Dad when he caught me up there in the coop..so like Butch said once you get the bug,, when you old enough to get your own money ,own place, then you can get your birds thats what i did..but you can do anything you want as long as you put your mind into it..Think positive at all time.. ---------- Ralph.... ----------

Tou,
When I first got into rollers I flew them out of a rabbit cage hung on the side of a shop building. The rabbit cage had roll roofing on top and a 4 inch X 5 inch hole cut in the top of the cage for a trap. You can fly 11 birds out of an old rabbit cage until your kit box is finished with no problems. This is only a temporary fix but will serve the purpose until you can get a kit box for them.
An 11 bird kit would be easier and cheaper for you to maintain than a 20 bird kit.

there you go ,Double R,said it just right,,,you say you going to save money to make a kitbox,ok,,but what you need to do is think how would you keep the money coming in for feed, that is very important in keeping healthy birds beside clean loft and water.thats free,,, you want to give them the best food especially you say you want to breed, they need more than just rice and corn,,ok...so think about it... start small and grow from there.. ---------- Ralph....
