Ran across this pic. on a really terrible website. But it got me thinking. If, and just if, BOPs are attracted to certain colors(i`m not so sure they are) But what do you think they would do with a pigeon colored like this?

I really dont have much white in any of my stuff. But if I did I think I would try Dyeing a few in different, off beat colors, just to see what happens. Green, bright blue, Orange, maybe do a few like easter eggs??? I know it sounds funny, but with the problems some have, who knows, Maybe it might help.

Most preds have a base line of prey, and are used to what that prey looks like. Is it possible to throw them off with crazy colors?

I can tell you from experience these colors are no deterrent for BOPs,on the contrary they make the birds an easier target.Stay away from painting your birds!

Well ok then, been thinkin bout this all day. If visual change wont affect them, what about smell or taste? what if I put a deodorant roll on on their back and chest? would they get one taste and let them go? Would the manly scent make them give up the chase? How about a dose of Vicks Vapor Rub? Just thinking out loud here.

Has anyone tried any of these things? I`m not looking for anything that would be harmful to the pigeon OR the BOP. Just a deterrent... Dish soap worked as a deterrent for me as a kid. really leaves a bad taste in your mouth that you dont forget soon.

I`m certain we cant stop them from taking some birds, but if theres a resident bird or two that is hitting your kit on a regular basis, maybe a bad taste a couple times can KINDA, train him to leave your bad tasting birds alone.

OK,OK... But I think in the spring when I start flying on a regular basis, I`m going to try some of these things on a group of culls. Put them up when a BOP is around and see what happens.

A friend of mine trained his pet ferret not to bite by using cinnamon oil on his fingers. Just seems to me this BOP problem can be lessened by aversion tactics that dont involve NOT FLYING... We can sit on our hands and watch them flop around the kitbox, and complain a plenty about not being able to fly , OR, we can try to find a way to lessen the pain, amd the losses.

Hector, W-D 40 is a sweeter taste. We use it or fishing lures and when they quit biting it can trigger some more hits. Not sure why but the fish seem to like it. You can watch them follow the oil trail on a fresh sprayed lure.

Butch... I'm with you on this, been breaking my head too on getting something done to save our birds without hurting the BOP.just so he won't touch our birds and leave them be,
For three days i try the rockets I the plant a few on my land .and since here in PR ,they celebrate Christmas like its the 4th of July I can make noises and no one cares they think I'm celebrating .after ten in the morning and 5PM I try it..well at 10:30AM i release my birds sure enough the falcon went for them i lit up the sky and firecrackers going off for about ten seconds he left empty handed, came back in the evening again he left empty handed.for three days it work the last time he caught one but let it go from the distraction noises.I save that one bird life...but we have to think of something I can't keep this up after X-mas plus i want to fly my birds at 7AM where it is more cooler than 10AM.. I was thinking about running oil all over the birds so it can slip out his claws when he grabs them like slippery when wet you know...let me know how it turns out with your plans ...and I do the same..

You guys have done pretty good so far, but be careful with these conversations. Just in case some new guys that haven't read the posting policy chime in, read this:

The Following Is Not Allowed:

• Pictures, plans or descriptions of traps intended to catch federally protected birds of prey or comments or advice of any methods or tools designed to or intended to harass or discourage a protected bird from its normal habits. General discussion of the MTBA, birds of prey and related topics are allowed.

Their could be eyes watching what we say!

It might be a mess but I was thinking about peanut butter. It stops a dog from biting. So if he get one he will have nothing but peanut butter and feathers in his mouth. He won't be able to eat. The only other thing I think might work for us in southern California. Is go on stike from flying for a whole year or two.

I was talking to a guy who told me that some people have tried putting green color on their rollers, and that the hawks, etc, don't want to mess with them because they resemble parrots...

A neighbor of mine found one of my pigeons being eaten by a hawk and called me over to witness it. The hawk was the size of a Coopers but had a bigger/fatter head, shorter tail, shorter stubbier wings, and very red/orange colored breast. The hawk started at the head and worked her way down to the middle of the chest. Can anyone guess from the description what type of hawk got the birds X 3.

Val, and Smoke, I get your point. I certainly was not looking to do or cause any harm to ANY bird with this thread. I was simply looking for a way to make our birds less appealing to their birds. If I can save just one of mine this year, which might turn out to be the right one, it would be worth the effort.

I can see how a bottle rocket might be pushing the envelope, but something to make them smell bad or look out of their normal food group seemed innocent enough to me...HMMMMM Kinda like putting up an invisible fence around them.
