Keith:

If the bird has value & I think I can get something out of it, I will. Kowning that the ratio of good to bad is going toward the bad side as the bird gets older you can breed out of very old birds......Glenn

Yes, why not if it can still produce the goods. A friend of mine has a bird that is 22 years old, that is still filling the eggs. Still producing very good birds in the air. I have a son of this old stud that I am very happy with as well in the breeding pen.
I don't believe there are any expiration date on the ability to produce the goods. I hear Racing Homer guys say that you should use young studs to produce the goods. I hear Roller guys say that you should wait a couple of years for the bird to mature before seeing the full breeding ability. From my experience, a young bird can produce just as good of quality stud as a very old bird. Cull will produce more culls as they say.
Thor

P.S. My current breeders were bred from 10 year old plus breeders. Tried pairing old with young (10 plus cocks to 4 or less years Hens vice versa)

GLEN IS THAT A FACT THAT WHEN A BIRD GETS OLDER HE DOES NOT PRODUCE AS GOOD IN REGARDS TO QUALITY OR IS THAT WITH YOUR FAM. I HAVE NOT STUDIED THIS OR NOTICED IT IN MY FAM AS OF YET.

If a bird is producing top quality birds for you ,they will produce good birds even if he is 12 or older.

Keith:

Prime breeding years 3 to 8 or 9 years old. There are exceptions to this, but the only way to prove that is not to turn your birds over and keep your present stock breeding past 10 years old. I have bred out of older birds mostly cocks & the older they get the %'s go down.

Glenn

P.S. 520 is 13 years old & showing his age....you want to try him out?

Hello Keith:

You can do that but remember 842 is his grandmother on one side & great grandmother on the other side. The cock is highly inbred already and your are taking it back to itself.
