JUST BECAUSE ITS A GOOD SPINNER?
TO REPLACE A LESS PRODUCTIVE BIRD?
TO INPROVE TYPE?
TO MATE TO A CERTAIN BIRD?
TO REPLACE AN OLD BIRD?
BECAUSE OF A CERTAIN COLOR OR MARKINGS?
TO ADD STRENGTH, CHARACTER, EXPRESSION?
TO PUT MORE OF A CERTAIN LINE IN YOUR LOFT?
ALL OF THE ABOVE

YOU OWN REASONS WHY YOU STOCK BIRDS

JUST BECAUSE IT’S A GOOD SPINNER?
No birds that I move to the breeder loft have the best whole package available to me. They must also kit, and have decent frequency.
I pull the best kit birds to try in the stock loft.

TO REPLACE A LESS PRODUCTIVE BIRD?
Yes. My current Stock is not giving me an acceptable percentages of usable birds.

TO IMPROVE TYPE?
At this point I pull birds based on performance only.

TO MATE TO A CERTAIN BIRD?
If you are referring to pedigree breeding NO!
It is more the other way around at this point. I may decide to breed the best kit bird back to its parent.

TO REPLACE AN OLD BIRD?
Not there yet.

BECAUSE OF A CERTAIN COLOR OR MARKINGS?
Not just NO!

TO ADD STRENGTH, CHARACTER, EXPRESSION?
I believe that Strength, Character, and Expression should be defined by what the bird does, not by how it looks.

TO PUT MORE OF A CERTAIN LINE IN YOUR LOFT?
I have started working with a new family. I do not intend to cross them. If I like them I will be replacing the old family when I add new birds to the stock loft.

Smoke,
For alot of fanciers, the reason for stocking certain birds would include those you have posted, and also for the simple fact that they need more birds in the breeder loft to breed more numbers, simple as that..Those that get eaten up bad put more numbers into the stock loft to breed more young to replace those they have lost.

I agree with thor,,room for improvement..is always there if you have good birds..keep breeding for it ,,I read somewhere Pensom had 40 pairs to breed from,in one year he had 400 birds. thats why he had so many Champion.

This was a question Johnny Smith and I where talking about this year.
He said something that made so much sense, so here is what he said.

IM always looking to improve my stock. Its like they are competing for there position to be a part of the team. No one bird is safe. When you have a bird that is better then one of the birds in your stock pen, you must put that bird away and move on from the other.

Do you actualy think the one on your kit is better or is it that people forget how good the bird you but away 4 years ago was, that now you think the one that is flying now is better.
How much better can we make them?
Ive seen many kits some real good some not but theres a point that they cant get any faster or deeper,i think a real good bird of today is not any better than a real good bird of 30 years ago.my opinion.
It think it goes with the saying,, the grass is always greener/

To keep BOP'z from starving during the winter months.

Making sure the BOP'z get only grain feed birds.

Cause we just like the little guys.

Hector,

I have to disagree with you on this one, I think that the birds can always get better, whether it's speed, type, quality, kitting, frequency...

I believe in breeding, my goal is to produce better birds than my current breeders, then breed those and so on and so on. So in saying this, hopefully in x amount of years from now my birds would be much better than today's birds.

However you do make a point on knowing for sure how a bird performed 4 or so years ago. But it comes down to how the bird is breeding.

Just my opinion, you know I have much respect for you and your opinion and knowledge in the hobby.

Hector,
I am looking to improve the percentages of usable birds that I get from my stock loft.
Just because the bird I pulled 4 years ago was a great kit bird does not mean that it is a great stock bird. If it has not produced up to my ever increasing expectations, I will be looking to replace it in the stock loft.
When the percentages of usable birds gets to where I want, then I will be looking to replace with birds that produce higher percentages of quality bird, not just usable birds.
I believe that there is always room to improve your stock loft.

Could be that when I am looking at my A-Team there is a larger proportion of birds from a certain pair that have survived the BOB for 2+ years. That may be something to look at as well.

maxspin, it does seem like the young from some pairs get hit and others just seem to survive. unfortunatly there are not the top birds.

my point is that ive had my family of rollers since 1982 and had others before that,i can still recal one of my favorite birds of my life, this was a 1978 hen, this hen whould spinn 10-20-50ft what ever she wanted with the most speed you whould ever see,if that bird was that good then, how much more have we improoved the breed?
I have seen many kits and many very good birds, but i cant say that hen in 1978 was any better or less of, than todays best birds.
If my birds are not any better its becouse of me not the birds, they will always be good if you know how to pair them.
Some people havent had rollers for more than 5 years and think the breed started when they did, believe me thes rollers where spinning ther a,, off way before Pensom.
We cant improove that speed and quality,we can improove the % of good once we get.
My opinion Hector C

Hector,
If that 1978 hen was as good in the stock loft as she was in the air, then she would never get replaced. I would be trying son's and daughters off of her to try to get a whole stock loft full.
We are in a much different point establishing our stock loft. I have many, many years to go to catch up with you.

I just think people forget how good there birds where a few years ago,(if they where good).
I think that if you have your very best cock you can ever imagine and put it to the best hen you ever saw, they are not going to produce any better, they will produce i good % of birds that are the best you ever seen this year LOL.

Each breeder can take their stock back or move them forward. The problem is it takes several years to see the movement in either the plus side or the negative side. It will take another several years to correct poor decisions made years ago when the outcome is realized.
