My honest opinion,
Depends what auction your talking about.
EGGBID: be very careful you don't have a clue what your getting or what kind of conditioned they are in. Not saying that everyone on eggbid has infected culls. But you have to use your head and look at what you are buying.
Say for example your looking for roller for competitions. Is the person your buying/bidding from a person that has done well in competitions? Or is this person just selling the name of a certain breeder. Is the birds he selling have the original breeders leg bands on them or do they have someone else's on them. Reason I mentioned this is if your buying birds say from Mr. XYZ and he has say for example Brian Middaugh birds for sale. Why don't they have Brian Middaugh bands on them? if there out of Brian Middaugh birds then you don't have 100% proof they are. I believe if your looking for a certain family of birds you need to do your homework and get that family not someone else who bred them there way.
Not to long ago I posted some of Ken Easley birds on eggbid for auction. Well these were birds that came from Ken. Not birds out of his birds but ones with his bands on them. I posted on eggbid that these were birds from Ken Easley and gave the band numbers. I never used these hens except for fosters because I didn't have any mates for them. And for someone that had Kens family they would do them good with them.
But if you take your time you can get the family your looking for but it just takes time. Please get original birds if by all possible. This way you can give your honest opinion on a certain family. And if they don't work for you they don't work for you don't settle for less if you don't have to.
Now if your talking about the NBRC auction that is a different story all together. These people were asked by good friends to donate birds to the auction for the club. And sometimes its the only way a person will ever be able to obtain birds from certain breeders. It might take a little more money but you are getting the family you want. And it might be the only way a person that lives in an area that don't have flyers or someone they can drive to get birds.
The only down fall I hate about buying/bringing in new birds is if they have something in there loft that could kill all or most of your birds. Like PMV or something that don't show up until a few weeks later in your loft. And if it's something that can stay in the wood of your lofts where you wont be able to use your loft or kitboxes because of the virus you brought in. Then what are you going to do? So please be very careful when your brining in new birds. Because you have a lot riding on them in more ways than one.

My brother had bought this red check hen from the NCRC bbq... Guess what? She's related to the birds in the kit that took 4th place in the worldcup this year, she's a sister to majority of those in that kit a pure emberton from Dave Vang. Man was my brother lucky no body bidded on those 2 birds, purposely.. lol, It depends on where you get them and how you get them...
