does temperament play a part in performance or the flying ability of rollers? if so what part? in whp's book he says a bird must have it and that we should study and breed for it.

how deos it matter was the question right I really dont know and cannot give a educated answer on that. butit seems the goods ones alway have something extra special or sweet about them that make you fall in luv so i just focus on the air and dont get involve or (sidetrack )with trying to figure sh-t out we are not scientist so i leave it to god and just roll them hard!!!!!

ok, here we go. the reason why i asked is, i noticed something while flying my birds. igot hit by a bop and the kit dodged and flew fast and got back together and relaxed like nothing ever happened. there were a few birds that always did their own thing and flew miles away then came back later. when i got the birds back in, i put in the show pens 1 by 1 and noticed that the birds that left the kit when a bop hit were on the jumpy/wild side and the ones that stuck to the kit were more calm. therefor returning to their natural performance.

if you come from a place where they shoot alot you always stay jumpy same way. on the serious note with the birds i believe the it is genetic though in the bird i believe it can be passed on in pigeons the hyper activity is a fault i cull them all the time

come on now ilive where it is always heated and i don't walk around jumpy. but has nothin to do with rollers. thats a book that need not be opened. you say it does not want to be eaten. birds like that will leave the kit even if a crow or gull flies by. that is a little to skittish.

mine run from little sparrow (chi chi)but I think Temperment is geneticly linked i think it can be past on from bird to bird like if a bird come down early it can pass that shit on clapping high strung all passed on getting shot by max priceless.
that why they better fly and let me catch them when i want to or I swat them down out the air that usaully calm them down (dazed)

Temperment is a very special piece of the puzzle it allows your birds to be able to be calm and stay focus on performing, basically stay in control of itself for performing and for you to evaluate them rather be aerial, show pen judging and handling from my past evaluations on life a person that has a bad temper seems to be a problem lol

Keith, The skittishness you described after putting the birds into the show pen, would be a normal reaction for anything that had just been threatened with it's life. I see it as the ones that were still AWARE "skittish" after you placed them in the pen, are the ones that I would want to stay focused on. They will be your smarter birds, and more prone to pay attention to what is happening around them.

I agree with SSCaliSpinners..... Temperament is important in your family of birds. I think it is this type of bird that is able to calm down in the air as a team and give you the big breaks that you see in Champion kits!!!!!!! ---------- Ray

Keith, My 272 family are the most squirmiest family I have ever seen, they tend to freak out especially in the show pen, but in the sky they are one of the fastest families I have seen, to me personally, Breeding for competition, I really dont pay to much attention to there temperment in a show pen unless i am breeding for show trophies, what they do in the sky is the most important thing to me. just my two cents! ---------- Dale SGVS

It appears to be that everyone has different definition or meaning for the word Temperament. Can you guys define or describe your understanding of Temperament so that we can hone in on the meaning. Thanks.
I define it or understand it as the bird lack aggression behavior and disturbance in the loft. Tameness and easy to handle from feeding all the way to caring and maintenance.

jerry, the skitishness i'm talking about is still going on while the bird is still in flight. you put 3 birds like that in a kit and a bop does a fly by, those birds sometimes react before their is any danger and never recover.they still fly around spooked when the rest of the kit has settled down and is back to business. they fly around, above, or below but never joining the kit. there is point where the birdshould calm down and get back to the kit and work. (my opinion)

For Me, The best birds I ever bred seemed to always be very calm in the show pen. Maybe its the family I breed from, IM not sure. You will be able to stick your hand up under the bird and just pick it up. It will stand there with its rear toes lifted up looking at you like he's just glad to see you.....lol ---------- Ray

Ray, I have seen the same thing, and that kind of bird is great. This picture I'm posting is one of my best ever rollers (a shrinker) and producers.. Plus she was smart.. When the falcon hit she would make a bee line back to the loft.. Paul

Temperament, calm and collected, easy in the loft, a bird you only touch and it moves from perch to perch. It will look at you with a slightly raised expression, almost with affection. This bird will lay in your open hand with no attempt to escape. Slide your hand under and it will climb onto your finger, then sit still while you reach with the other hand to gather it up. I'm not quilified to comment about their preformance in the air, but if this is breedable, and I think it is, then it is desirable. For me, loft life is as important as a quility as any other.

Hey Thom, my Rubies are about the same, very calm and easy to handle! I could reach under the parents and pickup the babies and the parents wouldn't fight me! They look and act intellegent! Haven't got any in the air yet, but they impress me so far in the loft! Got my fingers crossed! ---------- Val

Yes I think that would be great. You could still keep it as somewhat of a money fly but we will have to quality then win or place in the finals, I'm sure you can come up with some rules. ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS

Keith, My bad..I misunderstood the type of bird your described. If that were the case, and they were causing such a distraction to take away from the rest of the kit, they would be pulled, and placed with your B team,C team, or taken care of for good...You know, RUUDDDYYYY like to B-B-Q.

Hey Val, I'm glad to hear all is well. I hate a dirty nest bowl, so every week they get a new one. I would get the replacement bowl ready and then reach in and move the eggs, then the sitting parent. No fuss, no muss! The more you handle them the more relaxed they are, some is from all the handling but most is temperament I believe. Good luck, I think you will be happy with them in the air!
